Janky test rig but I don't do headlights for a living. I think the scheme is going to look killer once I have it all back together.

Thanks man! I'm just relieved that one is over and it came out the way I wanted. It was more nerve racking welding on projectors than cutting the hole for the snorkel on my 3rd gen Krypto's 06 2uz, the Sinister Bambi SlayerKrypto's 06 2uz, the Sinister Bambi Slayer

Day one of the header saga.

Needed tools and supplies:

-Swivel ratchets
Box wrenches
-Long shaft wrenches (ratcheting or standard end)
-Impac with swivel, extensions, deep and shallow sockets
-Swivel head ratchets with deep and standard sockets, shallow might make some things easier but not necessary.
-Breaker bar, not too long but be careful pulling the studs, I estimate its about 75lbs on them but I will look it up for installation. Warning not to bust the stud off in the head again
-Torque wrench, for installation....this is a must to seat the gasket properly. Two torturing sessions are necessary. One week apart.
-2 bottles of your favorite penetrating oil (snapped off bolts in the head is absolutely a terrible idea, you would have to pull the head if you mess it up)
-Rags, many or all of them
-jack - not the stocker.
-2 jack stands of non harbor freight brand
-good shop light
02 sensor sockets or 7/8" wrench
-Torx sockets(I had to order these)
-2x4 wood(16" but that may differ with your jack, explained later)
-safety glasses, lots of rust flakes will come out or dirt while you're down there. Don't get that crap in your eyes.

New hardware:
-Exhaust manifold set (i went with level 8, there is also titanium and also arp studs you can get)
-Exhaust donut gasket
-A couple of 2 hole gaskets
-New exhaust bolts

You need to remove the airbox completely to give you access the needed space.

Completely remove the ypipe first as you will need all the space you can get. Impac comes in handy busting this. Just get the shit out and toss it. I highly recommend the urd ypipe. Its well made and the elimination of flow impediment will assist with the hp/tq gains.

Take the tires and get the runner up on stands. You will be spending a lot of time on your back, knees, crouching, etc. The higher the better but I only lifted mine high enough to get the tires off the ground since I have a lift and larger tires. I use a set of 12t jack stands because of the height.
Take down the floppy engine splash guards as this is how you will be accessing a lot of the bolts.

Organize your parts! I have a makeshift table that I fill with bolts sitting in or on the parts I have to remove.

Now spray down all of the bolts with ludicrous amounts of penetrating oil. The more time you can get them to soak the better. You can work on the heat guards but you won't be able to remove them till the next step. You also need to spray the engine mounts on the frame side! Those can be a real bear and since they are specialty bolts I'm sure toyota charges a mint for them.

Close down the garage and let them soak overnight. There are some bolts you won't be able to spray easily without getting the heat guards out of the way so do what you can and then shut er down.

Remove the oil dipstick and tube. It bolts to the manifold.

Loosen the engine mount bolts on the driver side or passenger side and remove them on the other. This will give you the flexibility of allowing the opposite side to tilt while the other side lifts.
You will need a piece of 2x4 about 12 to 16 inches long to get the engine lifted enough to make access easier for the studs.

Now its just down to getting everything off. You can only do one side at a time unless you have 2 jacks and two pieces of wood. Don't twist too hard. If it isn't giving put about 65lbs of pressure on and then spray with more penetrating lube. Patience is your friend. NE types might need 3 or 4 bottles of penetrating lube. Just keep working it with head, oil, until it pops loose without excessive pressure. Not gonna warn you again. You've heard the safety brief 3 times now.

To be continued......

Got started on the headers. Whew its tight spaces in there so hardly any pictures. All I gotta say is pb blaster or deep creep those bolts multiple times. I don't have a huge rust issue but man some of those bolts are tough. The motor mounts and studs need soaking overnight because I ain't busting a stud.

I had to stop today on the second day as the studs underneath needed the heat shields out so I could spray them liberally with deep creep. I took some pictures to illustrate exactly what I'm talking about. Not an easy project to undertake but this is why the shops are charging so much to install.

I'm happy so far with the progress.

Coming soon is the pics and welding of the shorties to the stock cats and reinstallation of everything. Ill break everything down in the coming posts.

This thread needs an update!

Seems like this build had gone different ways than originally anticipated. The General Grabber APT tires are on in size 265/70 r18 and while installing the shop knicked a rim. I was planning on refinishing them all anyway but I went ahead and knocked that project out in a day or two. The garage was very smelly.

Currently I am in the process of building the True North Fab rear bumper and swingout. I got the DIY kit because I can't let them have all the fun and I will likely be modifying the design once complete. I have a few goodies sitting on the shelf which are waiting for install after I complete the bumper. I must apologize that I have been updating Instagram and some of the FB groups more than I have t4r.org but if you look close you'll see my pictures bouncing around the interwebs. I also have done a new media setup and will be making some videos logging the mods that I do to help others looking to DIY modify the 4runners. I'll have an update and link once everything is live. Lots of editing and stuff I am learning in the process and so far I'm enjoying it. Video editing is a little tedious and now I understand why there is a degree in it. It can be very complicated if you want to make a professional level presentation.

Sneak peak at some of the stuff going on in the garage.

Sadly the end caps would support a deck of playing cards. There is no drainage in the back of these frames to speak of. I fixed that.

I cheated a bit when welding these. Spatter gel works well at keeping the threads clean when welding.

When the weld nuts broke loose in the back I couldn't think of a way to make them welded again so I cut some windows in and then rewelded plates in to help support. The welds are disgusting but they are solid. Very tight welding for sure. I will also be redoing all of the rustproofing in the rear before I finalize the rear setup.

Bumper has been zipped for the new rear setup. I did not realize how much room was under the truck!

This TNF is a great kit. Everything fits well and beyond prepping I haven't had to do a thing to make it work for the truck.

So close I can almost taste it. Thanksgiving is a good day to knock this out.

The new workspace......its getting better

Made a bit more progress but I'm only getting a few hours a day to work on it. Enjoyable but I am fully ready to be finished and have the 4runner back on the road.

Painted and ready for install. Need to trim the bumper tomorrow and figure out the lighting. If I remember correctly it is the dark green wire for lights so I can just jumper off the brake light. Otherwise the Michigan state police will give me Gretchens over not having a license plate light.

I also have to fab up a rear camera mount to see if I can restore that feature to the 4runner. I was thinking above the rear tire but that might be too big of an angle downwards. Below would be pretty nice though.

I will be working on the mudflaps as a separate project since there will be all kinds of bracing involved. I have the mudflaps sitting in a box but I also want to make a way to hook them to the bumper when I'm on the trail.

Beefed up hitch will have to wait till spring. I'm barely able to get paint to dry currently Krypto's 06 2uz, the Sinister Bambi SlayerKrypto's 06 2uz, the Sinister Bambi Slayer.

I finally out the finishing touches on the True North bumper and after I had the electrical squared away so the Gretch squad wouldn't get me for no light on the license plate (a Michigan favorite), I went out to Bundy Offroad and had a little bit of fun. I must say I was impressed with the way the suspension handled off-road, the grip of the tires in mud, water, and sand. Also the Atrac kicked in a few times when I got the 3rd wheel off the ground and I was able to keep rolling.

The tires stuff really nicely into the wheel wells too. Glad I didn't go any bigger.

Thanks! I love the look and I'm working on some finishing touches with the bumper this weekend.

As a side note I've launched a YouTube where I'm going to document my mods, trips, and tips. I'm planning on doing content once a week released every Sunday. I've got quite a bit of content in the editing stage but I keep modifying the 4runner. There will also be some how to videos on wiring and other topics.

Looking for support, tips, and requests for videos as well but I am also active on Instagram.

@kryptowerx on Instagram.

Here's a link to my first video ever. I'll have another one up tomorrow with some of the bumper build.

Good stuff, bumper turned out well! Not a lot of 4th gen stuff on youtube, so great that you're getting some started!

I also have to gloat a little, I was the very first subscriber. Number 1 baby

I appreciate that! I am boring as hell but I just want to share some tech. 4th gens are pretty easy to work on......minus the v8 headers. Those can go straight to hell.

Added some mudflaps to the ensemble. Pretty easy to mock up. Video will be up in a week or two. Just got finished with the editing.

Also chopped off the rear resonator and inserted a 90 right behind the wheel. Now at least it won't get crushed offroad. No real noticeable change in tone either.

Also finished another part of the rear swingout by True North. Still lots of video to go on that one.

And some holiday cheer! Hope everyone's Christmas and holiday season was great.....hoping 2021 is better but I think the bar is pretty low for improvement.
