Adding Steering Wheel Audio Controls?

Apologies if this has been answered already, I've read through a few threads but could not find a definitive answer.

I have 2005 SR5 and would like to add audio controls. As I understand it, I would need to buy 2 components:
I took the liberty of taking off the airbag cover to see if there were even any wiring harnesses for the audio controls to plug into, but I could not find any (Only found two jacks, one for airbags and one for cruise control). I haven't tried it myself (in fear of tampering with my airbag), but is it possible to just buy the cover linked above and switch out the airbag covers? If not, can anyone provide me with a part number for the airbag with cutouts for audio control? If I am able to do this, it still leaves the issue of how the audio controls connect to the car since there are no empty jacks. My last resort would be to find a third party audio remote control that mounts on a steering wheel.

The audio controls you referenced are for the radio only. If you want to control the phone, bluetooth, etc. you need the controls for the right side as well. They are connected to each other by a ribbon cable, which must be purchased separately. Apparently, there is a covered slot to plug the controls into near the airbag wires. As for the airbag cover, I wanted to do the same thing as you, but the air bag is riveted to the cover and can't(at least for me) be easily removed. What others here have done is to purchase the whole assembly on Ebay for around $200 and then sell yours for about the same price, after you receive the cutout one. Some have also cut their existing cover with a Dremel or Exacto knife to fit the controls.

Part numbers for the audio controls. I got sick of having to find these in the various posts so I just made myself a list.

1 - Left Audio switch: 84247-35010-B0
1 - Right Phone switch: 84244-35030-B0
1 - Wire connecting two switches: 84204-58010
1 - Airbag: 45130-35431-B0

**2 - Mount bolt - W/cruise control - 9015950199
seen this referenced only once dont think its required; I have Cruise control, the person may not have**

Thank you so much for this. I couldn't find the exact part numbers.

Don't really want to dremel, so it looks like I'll try and find a complete airbag assembly. Thanks!

No problem. I had the same issue tracking down the relevant part numbers through various posts. The last two characters of the part number will indicate interior color.

I did see some airbag covers being sold for about $100. The job would entail drilling out the old rivets and re-riveting a new cover on. My brother has a riveter from some other projects and I had considered doing this. I'm just not sure if I want to take the airbag apart like that. If not done nicely, you would have to repack the airbag.

Nice write up here on a Subaru forum: DIY Swapping 05 Steering wheel Airbag Into 08 Cover
