I’ve tried a search and couldn’t find a parts list for head gasket job.

Just want to put a list together in case this is what I’m in for.
I’m thinking gaskets, new head bolts? I’ve already replaced the water pump. Is there a good list? Is there a good kit to purchase? Special tools? Should I stay with OEM? Where does all the big expense come in?

Here’s what I have-
2004 V6 142,000 miles
No external coolant leaks
I have a small coolant level drop in res. I’ve been watching- added 8oz so far
No sounds or stumble at start up. No CEL.
Black stone oil analysis kit on order.
Never over heated, res. tank never found empty.

That's kind of a big job to be replacing the head gaskets on a whim, don't you think. Have you done a compression or leak down test? Even a pressure test or test for combustion gases of the cooling system?

I would definitely check other things first before you jump on a head gasket replacement. My '04 V6 is at 184k and I haven't seen any problems and that's just my case though- but as Weaves said that's a big conclusion to jump to.

As mentioned ,seems like a little more diagnosis is needed..

Here's a price breakdown of the head gasket replacement that I just did on my V8. It won't help you much in terms of part numbers but it should give you a rough idea on costs. It came in just under $1k and that's including a new radiator, timing belt kit, and machine work to straighten one head and resurface both heads. Then add about 30 hours worth of labor.

And definitely go with the OEM head gasket kit. It's actually cheaper than some aftermarket kits. The V8 2UZ-FE head gasket has also been redesigned by Toyota and some of the aftermarket kits include the older design head gaskets. Fel-Pro offers both the older and newer design head gaskets which I would assume the same applies to the 1GR-FE. If you do go the aftermarket route, make sure you're getting one with the re-designed head gaskets.

Also, get yourself a white (120 grit) Roloc disc for cleaning all the old gasket material off aluminum. It will cut down on your prep time significantly. Yellow is also for aluminum but it's more aggressive so be sure to not to hold it in one area too long to avoid removing too much material.

For the 4.0 head gasket kit, you want 04112-31720. I believe Toyota lists it under Valve Grind Gasket Kit depending on who you buy it from.

It will have every gasket you need. The head bolts are separate, I used Toyota 90910-02162.

Like everyone said, verify before buying or doing anything because even doing it yourself is not cheap.

I'm worried that I just bought a ticking time bomb, too. 2007 4.0L with 193,000 miles. I'm hoping that maybe because it's after 2006 and it's already such high mileage, maybe I avoided the issue...

Should I immediately get the compression test and leak down test?

I don't know what kind of symptoms you're experiencing but you could do a quick visual check of your oil and oil cap for signs of moisture in the crankcase. You can also pop your radiator cap while the engine is running (COLD engine only) and watch for any bubbles which would be an indication that exhaust gasses are entering the cooling system. You may need to drain a small amount from your radiator to avoid coolant from overflowing as it expands from heat.

If you've got a compression tester, I'd do it regardless which will give you a good idea on the health of your engine.

here is my .02 cents.

i have a 2006 4runner with the 4.0 that has a blown headgasket. i did the compression test and it read 175-185 all across. The cylinder that was was leaking was reading at 185 actually.

how i knew it was blown was the coolant would disappear front the radiator and the overflow would fill up to the top. And when i would open the radiator cap after driving somewhere, it would smell of exhaust gasses.

another thing that told me what cylinder was blown was when i was doing the compression test, i took out all my spark plugs and my wife cranked the engine.......water/coolant shot out of cylinder number 4. it was flooded.
