Power inverter

Is there a way to hook up a small microwave to the power outlet in the 4R? I'm going camping in the middle of nowhere and would like to heat up my chicken breasts, rice, oatmeal, etc.

Well, technically you could plug in the microwave. But you'd blow the fuse unless the power draw is below the 100W limit of the inverter. See this thread.

Microwaves suck power on the order of 1000 watts. Thats 80 amps from a 12 volt system. That would require a good sized inverter and heavy cabling from the battery.

Instead of a microwave, you might consider a small 12V Thermo-Electric cooler. They cost around $50 and can be set to either cool or heat.

I've never done this but if you only want to heat up food I have heard of people that have rigged a way to attach food (sealed in foil) at a point near the exaust system and actually cooked it while they drive. I agree that it sounds wierd, but it is a good use of heat that is otherwise wasted.

A microwave is going to be way too much for the OEM inverter. As stated it is rated for 100w. even the small/cheap microwaves need 500+watts.

take a look at the back of the microwave..and look at what the AC amperage draw is.

from there find a DC-AC inverter that will output that much AC current

camping and microwaves just don't go together...

use the old fashion method... firewood, water to boil and a pot.

+1 on skipping the high-tech gear for a camping trip.
