Dreaded V8 Secondary Air Failure - kits?

Hi Folks,

2006 V8 4Runner Limited.

It finally happened to me, at 105k miles. I started the car yesterday morning and got the shopvac - after a quick WTF second I realized exactly what it was, revved the engine and it went right away and didn't come on for the rest of the day including 2 warm-ish starts. This morning it happened again, revved it and it went away, then came right back on. Revved it again and it went off. No codes thrown as of yet. I drove it and then parked it, until I get a bypass installed.

I have been looking around and there seems to be three kits - the Slyfox kit which is the least expensive but requires splicing and extra cost for block plates; Hewitt which has a partial plugnplay, with a plug in at the MAF and a wire to the starter relay, and comes with plates; and the Rutech which is similar in price but true plugnplay with simply plug at the MAF and also comes with plates.

I would truly appreciate any thoughts folks might have on this - I don't mind paying more for the Rutech to get truly plug and play, but want to make sure it has the same basic features as the other two. The only operational differences I can see so far are the Rutech must start within 10-seconds, the Hewitt within 5(?) and I am not sure about the Slyfox kit.

Any thoughts sure appreciated!

Ted

Stop driving it. Also no need for block off plates with slyfox kit. I have it and it works fine. Takes 5 min to install.

I went with Hewitt Tech, but I hear nothing but good things about Slyfox's kit.

Had the same issue this summer with the Secondary Air Injection, although mine did not seem to make a shopvac sound (probably did), it would throw a code p2445 i think, and it would actually go into limp mode and could not accelerate or go to highway speeds. The limp mode would go away after clearing the codes and drive like normal but come back within 100km. Bought the slyfox kit shipped to canada, came with instructions and all accessories needed. Mind you i am terrible with electrics and still managed to install the kit in 15 minutes. The truck is all fine now, and its been months since the first code thrown.

Thanks for all of the replies folks, much appreciated. I will freely admit when it comes to working on cars and motorcycles I am quite confident mechanically, but a disaster electrically. The Rutech simple plug and go solution is what is drawing me their way - just want to make sure that all three kits mentioned basically function the same way, just have different ways of getting there.

Still can't figure out how Rutech eliminates the Hewitt purple wire but offers the same bypass?

Well I think I have answered my own questions

From reading a lot of threads here and things online, looks like the Slyfox and Hewitt kits work pretty much exactly the same. The difference is that Hewitt comes all nicely wrapped up in a custom plug, and the Slyfox saves you about $100 by requiring you to splice into the existing wiring.

Rutech eliminates the purple starter wire used by the Slyfox and Hewitt kits, and adopts the Hewitt custom plug approach with a timer on the starter. Upside is that it is truly a 30-second plug and play, downside is it only is effective if you start within 10-seconds of turning to on. Wait any longer and the override will not function and you're back in code-city.

My 4Runner just started with the vacuum noise, and has not thrown any codes yet (three starts with the vacuum noise - which only made noise for a second or two before revving the engine and having the noise stop - been parked since.) I am hoping I've limited any damage they might have been caused (are the codes immediate?) and will likely go with Slyfox or Hewitt for peace of mind.

If you don't mind the DIY wiring Slyfox's bypass + Hewitt block off plates will save you some money.
