crazy radio reception

I've read a ton of threads on the radio reception issues. Mine will be fine one day but be crappy the next. When it's crappy the seek does not seek properly. The only thing I've seen useful is checking the connection at the radio and someone mentioned unplugging the smaller antenna. Is there any threads that break down how this thing is setup? Wiring diagram or something would be helpful. Otherwise the JBL sounds great, I really don't want to mess with it just want it to work properly.

Thanks!

No idea really. Just bought a 4runner for my son and it is very similar. Probably will replace the radio soon with an aftermarket with carplay.

Replacing the head unit and using the stock antenna seems to bring headaches too. I've read that the unit is supposed to automatically switch to the antenna that has a better signal. I'm wondering if that is where they get messed up.

I have this issue. My aftermarket unit doesnt get reception as good as my old one or other cars I drive. I wonder what the reason might be.

From what I've read, it's the in glass antenna setup. Seems the old mast style works better.

You guys with aftermarket head units are probably forgetting to hook up the power lead. The antenna is powered and must have its power lead attached to the blue wire on the head unit.

For years I had shit reception on the aftermarket radio that came in my ‘05. When the receiver finally crapped out, I ordered a new one, and when I installed it I saw the the old receiver was not hooked up to the power antenna lead. I suspect the techs who had the dash apart to replace the cracked dash had neglected to hook it up when they put the dash back together. Hooked it up to the new unit and now have excellent reception!
