'03 V8 grinding engine noise with video

I'm prepping my truck for sale and want to make sure it's mechanically sound for the next buyer. I was finishing up a 2 hour roadtrip, pulled in for an oil change at the shop near my house. Upon arrival, the truck sounded like it was about to give out. No pinging or metallic noises, but more of a grinding. I was shocked because the MPGs were normal, no CEL, and I couldn't hear or feel anything strange at highway speeds.

At first I thought maybe it was something catastrophic, but it sounds to me like it's limited to the front of the engine, maybe the idler pulley bearing? If you watch the video, you can see idler #2 has a slight wobble occasionally. Why would only that one part be failing, and would it be ok to just replace that one part? I know the 2UZFE is practically bulletproof apart from the waterpump and timing belt maintenance, but I don't want to sell my truck if there are hidden issues. I also don't want to replace unnecessary parts, so looking for recommendations. If it's a simple pulley then I can do it at home, but if this is a sign that the waterpump and timing belt need to be done, then I'll have to bring it to a shop

That sounds very similar to my 2004 V8 when the bearing on tensioner pulley for the serpentine went bad and I had to replace it...but it could be the idler pulley bearing as well, or both, remove your serpentine belt and spin both of the pulleys and see which one or both is noisy and or hard to spin freely.

Also just an FYI if it's the tensioner bearing, they comes with a new pulley on it, just remove the bolt and install the new one...but there are 2 sizes when I went and got mine, the earlier 2003 and 2004 V8s have a larger pulley then later V8s so roughly measure your's before buying the new one, they're measured in MM and I can't remember the exact size in mm but mine was right at 4" (I think this was 100mm or 101mm) and the newer ones are around 3 1/2" (I think this was 90mm), this also makes the serpentine belts a different size as well, I didn't have to replace my idler but I think it's the same size for all the V8s but I'm not certain on that, and they also come with a new pulley on the bearing.

The bearing in that fan bracket assembly/pulley looks like it's toast. It should not be wobbling like that. You may be able to replace just the bearing which shouldn't cost more than $10 but it would be easier to just replace the entire assembly. Part# 163070F010

Awesome, thanks for the replies. Is the bearing that looks to be shot close to the water pump? Thinking that since i'll be in there, I should do the timing belt and water pump, since I don't know how many miles are on it. I was told it was changed before I purchased the truck about 30k miles ago, but the serpentine belt looks like it has some age

The water pump and timing belt are both under the timing belt cover, it's rather a big job for the average person that may not have a good bit of experience in doing complicated and or exacting mechanical procedures and have the all correct tools to do the job, you have to remove EVERYTHING on the front of the engine and the radiator so you have more room to work and so you don't risk damaging it and that just the beginning, getting the crank pulley off is a very enjoyable job (NOT) and then you have to reassemble everything perfectly, as in getting the timing correct or you risk destroying the engine when you try and start it, if it were me I wouldn't do it unless I was keeping it, if you're selling it and you're sure it hasn't been done within the last 60,000 miles or so I would just discount your asking price during negotiating with a buyer so they can have it done after buying it!

Yea, been reading through a lot of threads, and while I am mechanically inclined, i'd rather leave something like that to the professionals. Thanks for the advice! I'm going to just go ahead and have a shop do the timing belt and waterpump. I've spent more than I'd like to admit making this thing brand new, I want to know i'm selling it to someone in the best condition possible. From what I've read online, this is a great kit to buy, does it include the bearing that I need to replace?

Unfortunately no, that kit only has what you need to do the timing belt and water pump, everything needed behind the timing belt cover, it also doesn't have a new thermostat which I would replace as well.

For the serpentine belt, you have a tensioner bearing/pulley and a idler bearing/pulley and of course a serpentine belt, I would replace all three since you say you want to do it right before selling, you can easily do these yourself, but if you get someone else to do the timing belt I would let them go ahead and do them since they have to be removed for the timing belt anyway, as was mentioned you may want to also check the fan clutch since it did look a little wobbly in your video and could also be the noise you're hearing.

That all being said, I didn't fully read all of your prior post and really missed or it didn't register in my brain where you said the timing belt was supposedly done about 30,000 miles before you bought, depending on how many miles you have put on it since you bought it the timing belt should have many more miles to go before needing replacing, it should be fine for 90,000 miles before needing replacing, no reason to replace it if it still has some good mileage left on the belt.

Did you not get a receipt from the former owner showing when it was replaced?

Also have you looked for a little decal placed somewhere under the hood to indicate when it was replaced, look everywhere under there for it?

When I bought my 2004 I didn't think mine had been replaced, I got a bunch of receipts but none for a timing belt and I didn't see a decal in the engine compartment, one day a few month after buying it I happened to look up at the underside of the hood and there was the timing belt decal showing it had been replaced, so look up as well(!)...BUT why would someone stick it there(?) it should be placed in a very oblivious place easily seen by anyone every time they open the hood, IMHO, so if you do replace it make sure whoever does your timing belt installs the decal as well and write the date and mileage on it(!), the decal come with any timing belt you buy and also make sure you give the receipt to the new owner as well.

If you do replace the timing belt make sure whoever you get to do it has a good reputation AND experience in working on Toyotas so they know more of how these rides are put together so it done properly and it would be nice to know that they have done a few of these timing belts before, I do all my own work, there are very few I would trust to work on mine, even some of the "Techs" at the Toyota dealership I won't even let change my oil!!

By the way the T4R looks awesome, much better than the photo when you first got it, and I commend you on wanting to sell it in the best possible condition for the next owner, not many would go that far when selling and I hope you get back what you have put into it!!

You nailed it! I went to replace the idler pulley today and spun everything without the serp belt on. The fan bracket bearing sounded like it was gravel.
