Cooked Transmission 07 T4R?

07 4runner sport v8

Hey guys, so driving down the highway last week something flew and hit the front of my 4runner and pierced my transmission cooler line. I didn't notice, and all of the trans fluid pumped out of the torn line to the point where the truck started slipping. Same point when I started smelling the fluid coating the underside of the truck.

Had it towed home, replaced the lines and the cooler, followed proper filling procedure after flushing it 4 times (using correct fluid) and replacing the main trans filter.

Now here's the problem, downshifts from OD/5th gear cause the truck to search for the gear for 2-3 seconds and then shift. If I floor it (at a speed where I'm in 5th) it searches for a second and bangs down gears hard.

Is the trans shot? The shifting issue only happens from 5th going down. All other shifts are perfect. The problems don't exist if I keep the shifter in "4", instead of "D". Something else notable, is that it takes 3-4 seconds going from "P,R, or N" to "D" for it to engage.

If the trans is shot, how hard are they to pull out and replace? Any tips?

Have you tried disconnecting battery for some time
It will relearn the shifting
Best of luck

Sounds like the pump is toast and line pressure is too low.

It does not take too long to destroy a transmission with empty oil. Maybe try to replace all the solenoids first then decide from there if you need to change the transmission.

Bad luck. One Tundra tranny lasted 700,000 miles.

Scotty Kilmer (50 years mechanic - owns only Toyotas - based in Houston - multimillionaire) says if you can shift through the gears and drive down the highway, keep going.

Every other gear shifts fine, it's only downshifts from 5th that are sloppy. It doesn't slip at all either. Do you know if there a solenoid that is specific to that sequence?

Does anyone know which solenoids control what? I would like to troubleshoot this before dropping a new trans in a 4runner with 90k miles.

Also, anyone local to denver wanna pm me a quote to do the install if I supply the new trans?

To answer your question -- yes, there are individual solenoids in the valve body. This will identify which ones are which:
Sonnax Toyota/Lexus A750E/F Solenoid Identification

and this tells you a lot more about that info:

http://www.gearsmagazine.com/resourc...2010_4_all.pdf

Give these a read and share your thoughts. I might be inclined to dig in there and replace the solenoids before shelling out for a new trans -- especially if it passes the abovementioned Scotty Kilmer Shift Test which seems reasonable enough to be true in this particular case -- if you can make it shift into each gear, that means the gears all work, but the electronics don't know how to make it happen correctly which is where the solenoids and such come in.

I have done similar work (removing the valve body and replacing failed solenoids) on a Grand Cherokee. It's not difficult work -- just nuts and bolts -- but it is really messy and you'll want to be meticulous about keeping parts clean.

Kilmer is an idiot about A LOT of things. Some of it he gets right, other stuff he gets so so wrong.

Take everything he says with an iceberg sized grain of salt.
