Morimoto Halo/Angel Eyes Write-up

I got some Morimoto XSB Led switchbacks from TRS(great living 20 mins from their store). A 80mm fits the inner low beam ring and a 120mm fits the high beam.

The first step is to get your headlight apart. Other's have written it up so I won't waste time on that.

Once opened take a thumb tack and make indentations in three spots corresponding to the mounting holes on the halo. Once marked drill holes on both the inside and outside of the shroud with a very small drill bit.

Once these are drilled attach the halo with hanging wire feeding it through the in and outside of the shroud.

Then drill one bigger hole corresponding with the wires and feed those trough after removing the connector. I used my knife for this(which has a melted tip due to a mishap with my car battery).

Then put the casing back in the lens and get your wires situated.

And cook it all back together.

I don't currently have pictures of the wiring because it has yet to be finalized. Pictures of them on amber are on my build thread (page 3).

The wiring is complicated because amber power takes priority over white; I'm still figuring it out. If you want it to run white with amber blinker run your white power where you want (I did an add-a-circuit) then run your amber to the rear tail lights since the front DRL is sometimes the blinker.

If you want it amber run it to your DRL so when the DRL is on you get the blinker and amber. I like this best for my car but its amber during the day and white at night due to the auto headlights.

Ideally I want to figure out a way to choose between amber with a working blinker and white with an amber blinker but I can't think how to get the DRL always on. All I can think of is using some kind of crazy selector switch with paired selections to allow different white and amber wiring selections and even then you can't always get power to the DRL with auto headlights. Someone did mention that Toyota can reprogram your headlight functions so I might look into that.

For the high beams? I didn't have the money.

You need to utilize 5 pin relay if you want white on as DRL + amber blinker when turn signals activated + white off when headlights on. I personally wired them amber only directly to DRL and they mirror my turn signals which is exactly what I wanted. I'm personally not a fan of white halos, there is too many of them running around including OEMs and it looks cheesy to me.

Thats a good idea. I completely forgot about that option. I agree that they are overused that is why I'd like the option to choose. Have you figured out a way for the DRL to be on even when the auto headlights turn them off at night?

for the low beams the stock projectors are mehh compared to the drop in low beam ones. Plus the ones they sell have the high beams included in the same unit

If you want halos ON when headlights switch DRLs OFF I would think you need to wire them to constant power source? But from what I read, having them ON at all times is not best solution. The reason is heat. Headlights, and HIDs in particular throw out a lot of heat, and heat will kill LEDs rather quickly. Looks like your halos mounted outside of the projector, and away from the bowl, may be not such a big issue. Other problem is visibility of halos. If you turn your headlights ON and halos stay ON as well, I don't think you will see much of the halo since headlights will overpower them.

I would hate to crack open headlights every half a year or so due to burnt out halos. These Gen 2 XSB halos are much better than 1 Gen, but eventually they will fail, it just a matter of time. Mine been installed since November 2015 (as DRLs, amber only) and so far so good, they hold their ground!

Thanks for the warning. As you said heat shouldn't be too much of a worry and these things throw out enough light as is so I think I'll call my dealership and talk to them about reprograming. They'll probably charge me an arm and a leg to do it.

Honestly cracking my headlights open doesn't even bother me anymore since I've had to do it a lot to attempt to fix and then to replace a lens.

@T4RNightHawk I stumbled across this old thread looking for wiring advice. I quickly went through part of your build thread and I love the Halos! I'm also from outside of Atl, so props to a dope rig from another GA guy.

Can you explain how you finally wired the halos and the resulting outcome? Ideally I want to have Amber halos as DRLs and then potentially have one halo blink with the blinker and one constant... I didn't even imagine having them be AMber during the day and White at night.

I just have them wired accessory orange now. Same trigger wire as my dual battery isolator. Whenever the car is on the halos are orange. Gotta rep that Clemson orange!

Ahh man, I love the amber look but I gotta forget about that Clemson comment before I decide against amber. I'm up at UK right now - Go Big Blue!

Does it stay solid or go with the blinker? I was planning on just splicing into the wires off of the DRLs (still need to look to see which ones I'm splicing into exactly)

It stays solid and I'm guessing you mean Duke? No deep rivalry there. As long as you're not USC we're fine .

No, I meant the good ole University of Kentucky. No rivalry, just a tendency to not like orange (Tennessee, Auburn, Florida..) HA!

Thanks for the help man!

Halos as DRL?

I know this is an old thread, but I have a question. I have morimoto halos with a bluetooth controller that I turn on with my phone. They always work with the turn signals on or not, but I am wanting them to automatically come on when I start my car. Any tips? Keep in mind my 4runner doesn’t have daytime running lights.

You would have to find the acc circuit under the hood and wire it as the trigger in a relay. It would also be wise to install a switch either in the dash or under the hood on the acc line so if you did not want to have them on for whatever reason you could shut them off.
