Drove a little with the E brake on, what to do?
So today I was leaving the store, and I forgot I had on the e brake. I drove for maybe 2-3 miles and the suddenly heard a loud slapping noise. Looked down at the dash & saw the BRAKE light, and though oh Sh!t! I immediately turned it off. My question is, did I brake something? And is the e brake on the 2003's the rear disc's, or on the 2001 Sequoia does it have the set up of disc brakes for stopping, and drums for the e brake? Should I be about to adjust it & be on my way? It barely holds any more, so should I tighten it & be on my way? And where is the adjustment for the e brake? I only got to a max of 50 MPH with it on, if that helps.

It is a disc for brake and drum e-brake. Try slowly rolling forward and engaging and disengaging the ebrake. If you hear any noises ie clicks, bangs, you should take it to any brake shop and have them pull the rear disc off and check the shoes. I doubt they would be worn down after that short of a drive but if it was me i'd rather know.

Could try the old back up and pull the ebrake several times to tighten. (The ebrake is ''drum'' style inside the rotor, like drum brakes.)
Same theory as adjusting regular drum brakes. Back up and pull, repeat?

That only works for regular drum brakes. The separate style parking brake drums are not self adjusting.

what he said.....
just swapped out new rear rotors and pads on my 05 SE. e-brake had a star nut adjuster that can only be reached with tire off, small flat head and lining up rotor holes with ebrake adjustment hole. up to expand shoes, down to retract.

Good to know. Next time I have the rears off, I'll do that. And when I pasted the links, I was just trying to show that I'm at least not on crack for mentioning. I'm not surprised there's no self adjuster in there.

I wish mine beeped at me, my 03 Highlander did, as a matter of
Fact it even beeped at you if one of the doors was open and you were in motion. Next time I get tires/ rotate them I'll adjust them.

I am new to the page and suck at tech, so I need to ask for HELP.
I have an 03 4Runner V8 Limited and I freaking LOVE IT. I got it used 2 years ago (230 000kms) and it's been freaking awesome! BUT!! The emergency brake shoes seized up and I couldn't get the truck to move (had the e-brake on while parked on a hilly part of the driveway for a few weeks, seriously, that's it). My dad has rebuilt engines and does everything for all of our family cars (except bodywork), and he has been LOSING IT on this ridiculous e-brake system... So, we replaced the shoes (pads were literally STUCK in the rotors) so we replaced those, then all 3 cables, and now the rotors... And we have had the wheels on and off more than I can say, (and the shoes on and off trying to troubleshoot) and we've tightened EVERYTHING sooo many times.... We have adjusted the shit out of these up and down, at the star on the e-brakes, under the console, and at the pedal. We can't get the balance where the wheels will spin in neutral, but the e-brakes will stop the car when in motion. And before I changed the rotors today, (but had done everything else), we removed the old rotors (for the 40th time) and the e-brake had obviously been catching somewhat, because the new e-brake pads had created a shit-ton of dust all in them and look scratched, but still wouldn't stop the wheel when in motion. So new rotors, re-adjusting, and the truck still rolls when the e-brake is on. I think it's making him crazy, and I've been there for a while. If you have any ideas on how to set this thing, I'd love to try them. THANK YOU!!

sorry to inform you, but rumor has it the ebrake systems are a royal PIA to repair and mandatory in MA for state inspection to reinforce this notion, i brought my truck to our company fleet mechanic, hes really good, for replacing a stud recently on rear end. the particular stud was in spot where he had to undo the ebrake or something and he was pretty ticked off about it. he said something about good thing he has long fingers for the job. good luck!!!!

The e-brake system absolutely sucks on these trucks, especially if you’re unlucky enough to live in MA, and realize that the previous owner (or dealer) removed ALL) of the internals prior to me getting the truck. I discovered it when I checked everything required for inspection the following year. Anyway, to make a long story short, I replaced all the internals and completely new rotors and rear calipers, adjusted the e-brake properly, and it would NOT hold enough to pass MA inspection! Apparently, the techs are instructed to set the brake, and bring the rpms up to 2000-2500 range. There is no way mine would hold past 1200, so I knew I was screwed. I adjusted it so I could not turn the wheels, and there was so much drag that I had to give it gas just to make the truck move at all. Even then, it wouldn’t hold past 2000rpms. I convinced the tech that there was literally no way to make it any tighter, AND showed him receipts for everything I replaced, and he let it slide. I immediately drove home and loosened them again, but now I’m due for inspection again, and have the same issue. Such bs to have to deal with something mandatory that is deficient right from the factory and cannot meet the inspection standard! Thankfully I’m moving to a place where I won’t need to deal with this nonsense next year if everything goes as planned.
