2003 4Runner Head Unit Area

I posted this on another forum but hopefully I can get more in depth answers posting it here too. Especially from Thai since he seems to be all knowing about the 4Runner.

I have a 2003 4Runner with the factory head-unit still installed. Has anyone had any experience in installing two decks (is that the word?) in the factory head-unit area? Hopefully that makes sense, I am not sure if I got all the terminology correct since I am still learning . Below is a photo of the system I want to purchase, if anyone can give me feedback about this issue it would be much appreciated. Thanks

JM,

Nope i don't have an answer for you. Sorry. I am not sure if the '03 4runner's HU area is a 1.5 or double din. If it is a double din, then you probably can fit those two decks (assuming that those decks are SINGLE din each). You may have to go to your car audio installer to check the size of the 4runner's Hu area.

Sorry...hopefully, someone else can provide a better answer.

Judging by the way my headunit went in, I think it's a full double din. There's a full din worth of space below my Pioneer so you should not have a problem.

NP, Thai and thanks for the info Neech, I even checked up with a car audio store around my area and they said that it wouldn't be a problem doing a double DIN installation. Of course I am not going to buy from them, they are charing $3500 smackers plus installation for that system when I can get it for 1900 over the net.

Now I just have to figure out how to remove and install the units...Hmmmm

By the way, what did you use for trimmings? I heard there is about a 1/4th gap on either side if you don't have trimmings and doesn't look too hot. Any idea where I can find double DIN trims?

Back when I put my HU in there wasn't a kit available so my installer made a custom one, $100, for the install and the kit. This was just for the head unit and XM install.

It might be worth having an installer for your setup. Buy the navi online yourself and bring it to them. Come to a price for the install that you both can be happy with. I would imagine the navi screen that pops out would be a headache to install if it wasn't lined up right with the dash. A good installer (experienced) will know what to look for with that especially if there isn't a double din kit available.

I'm not sure what's involved with a navi/stereo install but in the ball park of $300-$450 would seem reasonable due to all the mounting, cable runs and custom kits that might be needed. Plus, if something goes wrong with the install, they have to correct it.

Yeah you are right on the money, installation is running at $400 dollars and hopefully they can custom make a double din unit for my setup since I haven't found a company that makes one yet for the 03' models. Anyways, thanks for the help. I think I am going to stick with the plan on ordering it over the net and then bringing it to an installer. It will save me a lot of money. I just have to wait because my credit card is still being processed by the bank, they said it will arrive in 3 weeks (this was 2 weeks ago) so it's coming soon. I'll post screenies when everything is said and done.
