Mine seems to be a 20 gallon tank though I have never filled up more than 19 gallons at one time.

If yours is a 4th gen it has, as been stated, a 23 gallon tank, it is clearly stated in your owner's manual.

I run mine very low & have put in up to 24 1/2 gallons several times. The last two gallons are always very tough to get in; must fill very slowly.

A few months ago I drove 18 miles after the Range computer had reached 0. It took 21.5 gallons that time. My Empty light comes on at exactly 20 miles remaining.

If you indeed put 24 1/2 gallons in you have not only fill up the hose going down to your tank but you also had some go into the Fuel Evaporation system, namely the charcoal canister, which if you do this too often you WILL have to replace it and possibly other parts of that system at some point since it's designed to only handle fumes and not liquid gasoline, that system is not cheap to have to replace some if not all of the parts!!!

Correct, there is a real the gas pump clicks off at a certain point. To prevent you from ruining your evaluation system.
