Front end rattle help
Just today I noticed a terrible front end rattle coming from my runner and I can’t figure it out
It seems to be louder on passenger side but Audible from both sides
It happens when rolling on flat smooth pavement and bumps don’t make it that much worse
At first I thought it was my skid plates but they’re tight so I am 96% sure that’s not it
I can reproduce the sound by solidly hitting the top middle of the tire
It is definitely a metal on metal rattle but I can’t find it
From a quick check in the dark, my skid plates are tight, the brake rotor shields are tight and the exhaust heat guards are tight

I had a terrible rattle because some of plastic fasteners were broken and or missing. After replacing those, the rattle went away.

No loose plastic fasteners that I can see
Skid plates removed and the sound is still there...

Get under it and check exhaust hangers and shake stuff till you can replicate it. I chased down a rattle, pop, tick for half a day coming from the right rear tire area and it ended up being a couple of loose lug nuts.

I think (hope) I have found it to be the exhaust heat shield that’s about 3’ long and runs under the passenger seat
I’m gonna take that off and hope it does the trick. If that’s it I’ll probably just buy some exhaust heat wrap and wrap the pipe

The heat shield was about 90% of the rattle but there is still something causing some rattle... Should I pull the front sway bar? Should I Just try to grease everything? IDK where to go from this point, Ive got no skid plates and my heat shield removed. Exhaust hangers are tight, lugs are tight, shocks are tight

Update: HELP
I’m hoping someone has some input
It was not the heat shield
The noise is still there
It’s rotational and not related to rpm but wheel speed
Lug nuts are tight
Drive shaft is greased and tight
Skid plates are still off
Cv axle boots are not torn
I’m really stumped here and I’m getting ready to leave on a 200 mile trip tonight and would prefer not to break down on the side of the highway
Does anyone have any ideas on where I could check to find this damn noise

Good luck, I'm still chasing down a suspension/steering rattle on mine. Rattles when hitting bumps. Replaced LCA bushings and steering rack bushings with polyurethane, installed new inner and outer tie rod ends, removed the rag joint in the steering shaft, installed new uniballs in the UCAs, rebuilt the CVs with new OEM boots and grease, and installed a low mile steering rack. Next I'm doing LCA ball joints then wheel bearings as a last ditch effort. After that if the noise still isn't gone, I'm selling it

I recently had a similar issue on my 2008 4Runner with 140k. The problem was fixed when I replaced the front sway bar end links and bushings (went with poly bushings). It completely eliminated the constant rattling over bumps. Replacing the links improved the rattling and the new bushings ended the noise. Would really encourage trying that. Parts cost was around $80.

I sit here reading all this and laughing. Every time you do a trail run, do a change to a sytem( upgrade), there's seems to be a new noise you have to chase. Some you can find and fix, some is elsewhere than you think.
I have a couple and know where it's at and coming from, but nothing you can do about it to fix it. The never ending cycle.

I drove from miami to Daytona Florida tonight and the sound has now progressed from a rattle to full blown screeching even at low speeds
The steering still feels tight though so I’m not sure if it’s a wheel bearing, a joint or the cv axles or something else entirely but it is much worse much louder and doesn’t go away with braking but the car does pull towards the passenger side which is the problem side when I brake sooo...not gonna be cheap I’m thinking

Sure sounds like you've got a seized caliper. Hopefully you can find a shop to get you in ASAP. And yes, it probably won't be cheap unless it's feasible to do it yourself while on the road.

At first was going to say check anywhere that has a washer connect and tighten. If it only makes the sound while your in movement, went from rattle to screeching. Check to see if anything got between the rotor and dust shield. Check any tight spots on rotational parts, cv axle. Possibly any pulley areas.
Wheel bearing, lift tire off the ground, grab 12 and 6, 3 and 9, push and pull.
Mine was bad on 1 side and couldn't feel any play with the push and pull.
When I pulled them, I could feel it then, but no noise.
