Painting rims

Hey, the paints been chipping off my stock rims. So with the winter season coming up and those rims coming off, I figured I could spiff them up with a little paint. But I'm not too sure on a few things. Can I sand blast the stockies? (they are aluminium, right?) has anyone painted theirs themselves and could give me a few pointers? thanks

Hey man,

i painted my stock rims and they came out great! I used 300 grit sandpaper to scuff the clearcoat, then i used rustoleum primer then rustoleum black satin paint to paint them, only took a few hours and i did them in my garage. They look great on a silver truck. Let me me know if you want some pics and i can e-mail them to you.

Yes they're aluminum and sandblasting will be fine. I had mine powder coated and they were sand blasted first.

i sand blasted them and painted them myself. I sand blasted the center caps too. I primed and painted them with rustoleum spray paint. they came out great. You'll want to use fine sand as the course makes larger pits in the aluminum.

here is a pic of mine painted

Video

I'm wanting to paint mine too, but I'm wondering if it could be done with the tires mounted on the rims and I don't want to paint them with those ugly wheel balancing weights on there. Here is a good video on Youtube I found

Seeing as how the 4 Runner does not have rims it has cast wheels...lol sorry pet issue...just like engine and motor for me.
at any rate you can spray them if you sand blast them, or you can take them and them powder coated. I was quoted like a reasonable amount not long ago, problem is I need to tie that in with a service trip over the weekend as I dont have 4 extra wheels or jack stands to use in the mean time.

I recently purchased a '04 4Runner. In general, It's pretty clean. But the rims have some pretty nasty corrosion. I'd like to get them restored (assuming that is possible). Just wondering how much it would run to have them sandblasted and powder coated. Any info/opinion is appreciated.

Some shops charge $150 per wheel to have 'em powder coated.

Cost me less than 50 bucks with plastidip. Light sand. 5 or 6 coats. Or a can a wheel.
