URGENT: ignition locked 300 miles from home

I just drove my V8 4runner 4x4, parked it, then came back to the car unable to get the ignition to unlock.

I have tried jiggling the key, and the key fob works on the doors. It is currently 3am. I will update the thread tomorrow after I figure out if the key unlocks the doors from a locked position. The key fob locks and unlocks the car.

I called a mobile locksmith and he stated the Toyota keyed iginitons fail and we would have to drill out the igition, turn it on then replace the igintion with a new unit. All costing upwards of 600 total.

Here are pictures of the key. I believe the key has finally worn out to where it will not engage the pins in the ignition.

I really want to get home, any info on this issue is much appreciated.

I have tried jiggling the steering wheel and turning the key at the same time to no avail.

Try moving the key inwards and outwards just a tiny bit, the key maybe going to far into the ignition or not enough.

Good Luck!

I've had this issue a couple times in the last 15 years. All I did was just wiggle/jiggle/push in/out. Sorry its not much help, but it is frustrating because last time that happened I was going in to work and already running late.

Sounds like a worn key. A friend of mine has an '03, he is able to completely remove the key from the ignition after he starts the vehicle. Might try heating the key and/or the ignition with a hair dryer to maximize tolerances. Crappy time of year to be stranded. Hope you get home soon.

Y3ah its a worn key. My primary key behaves so, i can remove the key on ACC, thus having full radio functionality.
I have a spare key though, and several dumb ones, so i should still be able to start the car, if this happens to me

@ OP, try heating the key , it should expand a lil and maybe engage

Try a second key ? Maybe have one cut off a blank (cheaper) camry/corrolla . you need only to turn ignition while holding old key next to cylinder.
Drill it yourself..use old key and needle nose to get you home.
