4th gen v8 with 125k - value?

Greetings!

I’m thinking about parting with Chuck, my 2007 V8 Sport Edition with around 125k. KBB gives me a value of around $7,000, and I just had a dealership offer me what I consider a lowball price of $5,000. I’m trying to see what the collective wisdom on this forum thinks would be a fair price.

About Chuck...

It’s a 2007 Sport V8. Gray. I bought the truck used in Missouri in 2011 with 70k on it. I am the 2nd owner. I use it to drive to Maine every year to see family, and other than a rare weekend outing, it sits in the garage: I have a work truck for daily driving and work most weekends, so it basically sits, plugged into a battery tender.

I have not modded the crap out of it, but did do some things. I put some Nokian Vatiiva mud tires on it in 2012 and they still have decent tread. I replaced the stock suspension with a Toytec 3” suspension and lift. I also added a basic aftermarket stereo so I could have Bluetooth. Little things: weathertec front mats and window vent shades. Otherwise, he’s stock.

Normal scratches, but no accidents. TPMS light is on, but I think it’s the spare because it’s been on for a while and I have not needed to add any air to the tires. Just haven’t had a chance to crawl under there yet. The only “serious” issue I had was a small water leak above the sunglasses holder on the ceiling whenever it rained really hard. This was a few years ago, and it stopped when I replaced the cracked windshield, so I’m guessing it was the seal.

In the last 5k miles, I’ve had the brakes replaced at Meineke and had the timing belt and water pump done at the local dealership. I also had the common problem of the rear hatch latch rubber melting in the heat and then hardening, making the hatch difficult to open, so I replaced that, myself. Finally, during the last oil change, I had the auto repair shop I go to put in new headlight bulbs (not xenon or anything fancy, but still much brighter than stock).

I plan to sell only because it’s getting a bit small for me. Any thoughts on an asking price are greatly appreciated!

I just recently got back in a 2007 V8 4th Gen 4runner 4x4 (previously had a 2nd, 3rd and 4th gen v6). I specifically wanted the 4th gen V8, after driving a 5th gen. I looked for nearly a year.

The big difference in pricing I saw was the region in which these came from (because of the rust on the frame). I saw clean ones with similar mileage disappear quickly at 10K, while others with rusted out frames sat in the 4K to 5K range. I'm in Ohio and I personally was willing to travel for a clean, rust free frame. I made sure to protect and coat the frame after purchase (as our winters/salt use are brutal for rust). Not to say all cars in our region are that bad, depends on how often car washes are done during the winter by the owner.

If this was an original Missouri car, I would imagine the frame is OK from a rust perspective. If the rust is minimal (surface) on the frame, I would easily list it at 10K. I would adjust my price accordingly based on this. 125K miles is considered low for these trucks. This also based on a 4WD version (not the 2WD). Go compare the market value over KBB (just check ebay, autotrader and cargurus).

From my experience, the 4.7 V8 4runners are increasing in value (or holding steady). These motors are incredible and sought after (especially since more are simply rusting out). Even compared the the more luxurious GX470, it felt more nimble (at 400lbs lighter in weight). Just wish they offered this motor in the 5th Gen.

Hope this helps,
Bill

One big thing you haven't mentioned, is it 4WD or 2WD, 2WD will bring a much lower price, also the going price is much of the time depending on location, so I would check all the local ads for ones as similar to yours for what the going prices are, this is how KBB and most other appraisal website figure the value of a vehicle.

I will also mention that a "lift" and or any after market modifications on a vehicle for the most part will usually make it sell for less than "book value" or at the very least not increase the value at all.

Also another factor is what condition is the frame truly in, most T4Rs from the snow belt usually have a lot of frame rust and will drop the value a lot!!

The tires you put on in 2012 are not contributing to the best value, even of they still look brand new they are 7 years old and are most likely deteriorating needing to be replaced, tires have a certain life span even if they have never been on a vehicle before and can't be trusted to be safe after 6 or more years.

You do however have mileage in your favor, 125,000 miles is for the most part "low" mileage for a T4R or most any Toyota for that matter.

For reference, I picked up an '07 V8 Limited w/ 4wd w/ 159k for $9,500. I'm in the northeast in the Boston area, and it has been between here and NH all it's life so I do have some rust on the frame but cleaner than a lot of the others I looked at. My wife thought I paid too much but being my exact color combo and it also has nav and the rear DVD, I was willing to pay for it. I'm seeing other V8 SR5's and Limiteds being listed around here between $8k and $13K. W/ yours at 125k miles, I'd say to shoot for between $10 and 11k, you'll find the right buyer.

When you say "brakes replaced" go into more detail. Also do you have any pictures? Exterior, interior, undercarriage, and everything in between

KBB values are grossly low in my market, its hard to use it as a gauge.

If that truck is a 4WD and you took it to the San Diego / SoCal market, it would probably fetch anywhere between 9k kto 14k depending on the condition.

Thanks guys!

I should have specified: it’s 4wd.

I had not considered the fact that the lift and tires might bring the price down. I definitely should have, considering that I look at vehicles with similar upgrades with kind of a jaundiced view, wondering if they’ve been beat up on the trail or how they were driven. I know mine has not even scratched the surface of what many consider “offroading” (just logging roads and no Rick climbing or impassable terrain), but I need to consider how someone else views it.

Yeah, I purposely went to Missouri for this because I wanted to start with a rust-free platform. Looking for a used Landcruiser once I sell Chuck and I plan to do the same.

Thanks again for all the info!
