Dual Battery?

I am going to be installing a 2nd battery in my 4Runner. Where are you guys and girls putting your 2nd battery? Underhood, in the back? Show some pics, please thanks!

I moved the starting battery to the rear pass corner, then installed the house battery in the original spot (need the space to accommodate a group 31M battery). Used an Off-grid engineering battery mount in the back and a Pelfreybilt I had from my 16 Tacoma for the front. Both batteries are AGM and I use a DC to DC charger for the house battery.

I can't take any credit for it, but here's a very detailed explanation of the dual AGM setup that's in my truck. The PO did a great job and I love it.

Thanks for the link. That's a great setup, I'll have to follow that when I get around to doing mine.

I have plans to update the dual battery for the purpose of making improvements, but as of now here is how it sits:

My parts list can be found in this thread:
Toyota 4Runner Forum - Largest 4Runner Forum - View Single Post - Questions: Dual Bat setup and Power Distribution block from Shrock

I have started working on a triple battery setup now... with the fridge having its own dedicated 24 volt lithium battery in the back which charges off the dual battery using a DC to DC converter. I really need to do a write up on it because I have been wanting to share that but been busy. Its built out of 18650 batteries and last about for 2.5 days without any supplemental charge from alternator.

I have been thinking of doing a duel battery set up as well. But was contemplating of doing a lithium battery to run much longer.

Yes, you get a lot more usable power and much better power density. The same job can be done in a much smaller and lighter package when compared to lead.

All this lithium battery stuff is kind of my thing… been working with them for many years. I am more than happy to help if you want someone to bounce ideas off of.

Any experience of dual battery set-up in south american markets?

Following / reviving thread for more experiences - esp. from south american markets if anyone is there ! (different engine set-up it seems)

Cheers!

Bumbo,
Do you have a full write up on the hardware and components used to make the 18650 power setup for your fridge?

I have plans to make something, but I haven't got around to it yet. I also have a couple different designs I want to share which are specific to the 4Runner and that is still under development. I have moved away from the PCB (circuit board) style setup now that I have a spot welder to make packs.

In it's most basic form, it's 3 primary components if you want to research them individually.
  • Lithium Battery
  • BMS (Battery Management System for monitoring and saftey)
  • Adjustable DC-DC Converter / Charger

I'll have more information on these items in the future. I have kicked around some ideas in video, but have yet to follow it up with something more complete about the 4Runner setup.

ARB Fridge Startup - Lithium Battery PCB Load Test - YouTube
18650 Battery Pack - YouTube

Bluetooth BMS Testing / Hardware
18650 Battery Board BMS Testing Setup - YouTube

DC-DC Charger (used to charge from alternator)
Orion-Tr DC-DC Converters Isolated - Victron Energy

Optional Solar
SmartSolar MPPT 75/10, 75/15, 100/15 & 100/20 - Victron Energy

Eventually ill have something more complete for this 4Runner community... My intent wasn't to make an instructional, but ill try and include as much info as possible.
