Lightbulb Gas cap gasket, and not a whole new cap, fixed my CEL and codes

27 months after replacing my gas cap, the evap system leak codes returned. This time, instead of replacing the whole cap again, I got a new gasket from my dealer. Installation took about ten seconds. The older gasket looked flat and stiff, and felt more like plastic than rubber. The new one was nice and supple, like squishy rubber parts should be.

Cost was about six bucks with sales tax.

Part number 77316-33042

I ordered it here: 7731633042 - Toyota Gasket, fuel tank cap. Tube, california, spec | Stevinson Toyota West, Lakewood CO

It's not usually the gasket that causes the problem, it's the spring-lock mechanism that won't allow the cap to tighten properly. Glad that worked for you though.

Might not be the best long term solution, and also might depend on your climate. But my wife called one day in a panic due to CEL and a I think a couple other lights came on. Fortunately we keep a bluetooth OBDII connected at all times in our cars and have the torque app. I had her pull up the code and when I realized what it was I had her try rubbing a bit of neosporin (essentially Vaseline) on the gasket. CEL light went away. Might be worth a shot.
