You could even just lower the front of the skid only and get to the filter.
As for the timing belt, when you start getting into vehicles that are hitting this age, you either need to make sure you have the funds to pay someone to do the maintenance work or learn how to do it yourself, IMO. The V6 and V8 are probably going to be similar cost wise for the timing belt/chain to replace.

The chain is supposed to be good for the life of the motor… I have over 200k (single owner) miles and it’s never been touched, or needed to be touched.
Any time I see V6 owners who have experienced timing chain stretch generally neglected to chain oil on a regular basis. Buying used you might not have history here so there is that.
I do agree with what you said about age. When my 4th gen turned into an off-road toy / project truck, to justify keeping it I started doing all the work. To a degree I think it was necessary for myself as I really understand my 4Runner much better than I did before and have more confidence fixing something should I experience trouble on the trail.

I have a v6 too. I am the 1st owner and now have around 149000 miles. I've used synthetic eversince. It's my daily driver and I don't off-road it much. Just a few times when I went to the beach. It's always in 2h 90% all the time. All the rest is when it's snowing or at the beach or raining. Do I need a V8 for this purpose?

No, you don't. But that's not the point. The OP asked which way everyone thought he should go between buying a V6 or V8 truck given that everything else was about the same between the 2. You already have a V6 truck that works for what you do and you're happy with it. If you were in his shoes and trying to decide between the V8 and V6 for another truck, which way would you go the second time around?

Thanks for all the replies guys. Learning the differences between the them is helping my decision process. Keep the info rolling.
I’m use to my V6 and no timing belt replacements and I also change the oil myself. Removing the skid plate doesn’t seem hard at all so I don’t think that’s a deal breaker.
There are three that I’m considering. Two that are 2003 V-8’s with 125K miles and 175K miles and are around the same price. Both are limited with leather and sunroof. But one has a cracked dash that looks bad so I’ll probably pass on that one.
The V6 has been in one family since new and it’s a 2007 with 180K miles. No leather or sunroof.
Prices are very close. Haven’t seen them in person yet but might make sometime this week to go look at them.
Also to consider is that I swap my parts to the one I buy saving some money having to mod it right away to use.
Will the 2003 V8 have any issues with that? From what I see I think not.
Thanks for all the info.

Drove a GX470 from Denver and back this weekend roughly and the old saying "there's no replacement for displacement" is true. That 2uz-fe is a monster climbing up steep grades. If you're buying a "new" vehicle there's really no question here if you ask me.

My brother and I both have 06 shadow mica 4runners. His has the v6 4x4 mid travel and mine v8 4wd long travel. He runs 265 75 17 tires, I run 285 70 17.
His lighter weight overall in all his components keep him right there with me on most higher speed back yard trails. Where my v8 shines is keeping me moving at freeway speeds with little effort with all this extra weight. He only gets slightly better mpg’s Highway, but 3-4 better putting around the city.
Both are great trucks and you can’t go wrong with either as long as they turn with all 4 wheels

Kinda glad you mentioned that…
The GX is a really smooth running truck and is worth considering as an alternate to a V8 4Runner… it also makes a nice off-road platform because it shares many of the same parts as the 4th gen. It’s basically the same thing as a 4Runner with a more luxurious interior and amenities.
I say this because depending on where you live, you might be able to find a GX in the same or better condition than a V8 4Runner for less money. GX tends to fly under the radar compared to a 4Runner and has a different demographic for sales, but mechanically it’s all there for what you want off-road.
Plus they look pretty sweet once you build them up a bit and get away from the city vibe.

I guess in the end, it does not matter which the op chooses for as long as the truck he gets don't have mechanical problem. You will just have to sacrifice a a few things that the other one have or don't have.

Good point to check out the GX470. I have a friend who went the GX470 route and is having a good time building it for offroad. The interesting thing is that, because they are considered "luxury" vehicles, used GX470's often command lower prices than 4runners. Snooty Lexus customers don't buy "used", so the demand is less.
(Same thing used to be true of Cadillacs back in the 70's and 80's. You could buy good used ones for less than a Ford or Chevy sedan, for the same perverse reasons.)
Unfortunately, the rule doesn't seem to hold for Land Cruisers...

I looked at the GX when I was shopping for the runner and found that in my market at least, here in Arizona and even SoCal, the GX was several thousand higher in price than a similar 4R.

I live in the middle of the mountains in Colorado, having a V8 going over the passes sure helps A LOT! For me, I perfer the V8. I don't mind dropping the skid plate to replace an oil filter, no big deal.

if going with a V6, shop 2007-2009 to be certain to avoid possible head gasket issues.

Newer years also have a 5 speed transmission vs the 4 speed.
