Slipping/lurching only in 4lo?

Anyone else experience this issue:

When I switch to 4lo, the first bit of gas I give I feel slipping and also hear the trans/engine wind-up before a lurch forward. Then the next shift again, lurching. Coming to a stop it bucks slightly a couple of times. Power also seems really low compared to 4wheel high.

I don’t remember my old 06 V8 doing that at all. I remember the winding sound but the forward movement and. engagement of the gears never seemed delay or loss of power.

And when I put the shift lever in 1st gear all the way at the bottom, there’s literally like no power. The vehicle will wind up but barley move forward. Is that normal? I don’t think I ever tested that exact setup (4lo, shift lever in first) on my old rig so no comparison. Drives and shifts totally fine in 4hi.

Side note: when I go all the way down to 1st gear using the shifter, sometimes the light on the dash for gear indicator won’t light up. I have to switch back and forth a few times to get it too light up “lo”. Almost like if I jiggle the lever it will light up. Weird.

Thanks for the ideas

Almost sounds like it's not engaging all the way. What's it doing with the center diff engaged?

That’s what it feels like. Almost as if it’s not fully “in” 4lo. Haven’t tried it with center lock on. I will tomorrow.

Do you have a hypothesis? Are there any known problems with this?

Thanks for thoughts

I’ve experienced this as well. I hardly ever put it in 4Lo, although I use 4Hi regularly.

After a bit of driving it seems to get better. Always thought this was normal until I read this.

First gear low range has a max speed of around 5 mph, and it is definitely lurchy when it shifts in low range especially under power. Could be normal.

Could be you chipped a tooth and it's binding in the transfer case. Hard to say really. When I toasted mine I stripped the center diff gear which prevented it from engaging/disengaging and I simply couldn't get out of 4hi since the computer thought the center diff was engaged. Can't remember if it affected 4low to 4hi though. If you don't use it that often could be the actuator is just sticking. As was mentioned, top speed in first gear isn't very fast.

It could be normal. I might just be sensitive about it. Lol

This makes more sense now. Because it literally won’t go past a few mph with like half gas.

I’ve been thinking now it might be normal. Seems like it could just be that I’ve forgotten what low feels like. Lol
