Cool 4Runner Features I Never Heard About

I've had my 07 4Runner for over a month now and I'm curious about a few of the features and if they're on all 4Runners or did they dump the feature in newer models:

1 - Seatbelt tension relief: When I buck up and release the buckle I can hear a soft solenoid type click coming from the shoulder belt rollup area. Through experimentation I've figured out when the car is running and I buckle up tension is released so the belt isn't pulling on my shoulder as hard. As soon as I release the buckle (or turn off the car) rollup tension goes back to normal and the belt rolls up faster. I asked the dealership about it and their blank expressions made it apparent they knew nothing about it. They came out and played and were amazed by this, they'd never known about it....

2 - The little mirrors in the back corners. I'm still getting used to them and haven't decided if they're all that useful yet.

3 - The 2nd set of sun visors and the extenders - These I have definitely found useful, both the extensions that slide out the ends of the main sun visors and the 2nd smaller flaps that only shade the front. Make for pleasant driving on winding roads where I used to have to keep flipping the visor from the side to the front and back again.

4 - The roll down rear window!!! I haven't seen one of these since maybe the 70's? Very cool and useful when I'm hauling longer items that stick out the back window. My Jeep GC had the flip up window and I had to trust the lift cylinders to keep the window up and hope the window didn't break on a bump. I see they have them in some of the pickups too!

5 - The oil filter I can reach from above in the engine compartment - handy... I haven't had to deal with it yet as the dealership gives customers 2 years of free oil changes but eventually I'll be changing my own.

The list of things I miss are minor but include:
- no light in the door controls for the window and lock buttons
- no one shot windshield wiper switch where I could pop the lever up and get a single wipe and the lever would auto return to the off position.
- I can't lock the car while it's running using the remote fob. I don't have a remote starter and when it's -20 F I like to let the car warm up 5 or 10 minutes and my old cars would let me lock the doors even when the key was in and engine running.

You're lucky you didn't get the doors to lock with the keys in the ignition and running, this has somehow happened to me twice even though it's not suppose to be able to do so, the key fob which I keep in my pocket will not work when the key is in the ignition and it cost me $80 a whack for a locksmith to come and unlock the door, now if I need to get out for some reason I never close the door if it's running unless the window is opened.

Have you found the secret compartment in glove compartment yet?

Here's a topic you will enjoy reading.

My take on #2 is that the mirrors are worthless. I liked the idea of being able to use them when backing up but the reflection is not clear at all and I've given up trying to think they're worthwhile, haha.

In the top of the glove compartment their a small flip door for the secret compartment that I believe Toyota meant for the owner's manual to go into since it's the perfect size for the manual, but most don't use it for that, I know it's there but I always forget it's there.

Edit: I just looked in my owner's manual to see if it mentions the secret compartment, it does but says "on some models" and has an illustration, so not sure if it's indeed on all models or not.

That is a great thread! Funny thing is just today I noticed my seatbelt chime doesn't work - I drove to the end of my street to turn around and (shamefully) didn't wear my belt - the light flashes but no chime.

Well, there's a post in that thread telling you how to disable/enable the alert chime!

Im toying with adding speakers. I have an 05 and pulled mine just to look when I had the car apart to dynamat. The factory wire is there for the speaker, and the frame has the bolt holes for the speaker bracket. I need to see where I can pick up a bracket - or 3 d print one out of carbon fiber and add a speaker.

Lock while running

Use another key to lock the doors while it is running.

How about the "flip-out" tray on the front of the console arm rest?

I find the mirrors very helpful, especially with seeing if anything is coming down the row when backing out of a parking space between larger vehicles. That each side's mirror displays the opposite direction does take some getting used to for sure. Putting speakers in there is a waste IMO. The rear door speakers don't add much to sound performance so what's the point of even smaller speakers way back at the tailgate?

On the unlit switches, you're right, but this thread may be helpful.

I've owned my 2008 for almost 4 years and just found out the rear defroster button also defrosts the side mirrors... love my 4Runner

Research the issue with the rear window shattering if you're not familiar with it. The cause appears to be uneven heating due to parts of the rear defroster grid becoming inoperative over time. That's why I use my rear defroster/mirror heater only when absolutely necessary and turn it off as soon as the glass is clear.

Roll down both rear passenger side windows. Front windows up and the rear window up. (tailgate)
Drive 45mph... it may begin before that... enjoy the sound effects.

I do indeed have the secret compartment above the glove box. It had documents that included the first owners name, phone numbers and the initial finance agreement... I shredded those. I love the led mod to light up the door controls. Going to do that as soon as Minnesota warms up to t-shirt weather
