V8 Exhaust Advice (Cat-Back)

Hey guys, here is the setup.

Waiting to install DT Long Tubes

DT Y-Pipe will be going on after that

What's up in the air, is what kind of cat back I should run. Running the above setup, I will have deleted all the cats in my system. I will assume that this will make my exhaust very loud if I also get rid of the stock muffler, and loud is not what I'm after. Looking to have a nice deep sound that lets you know I have a V8 but also very comfortable to travel in and doesn't draw TOO much attention. I also don't want to break the bank as I already will have a lot of $$ into the exhaust. I was looking at Magnaflow mufflers but I was curious if they would take the sound down to an acceptable level though.

I know a lot of people run the Gibson, does anyone run it in the same configuration that I will have?

There are a couple of users with similar setups, some with URD y pipe/cat backs that don't seem too loud - I'm leaning this way once I do the headers.

This guy has DT headers, magnaflow cats, gibson cat back: YouTube

Why not run it through the stock muffler arrangement for awhile and see how performance and noise is, then go to an aftermarket if you still feel it necessary?

One reason, ease of install. My current ypipe and catback are super rusty and would require me to do some rust cutting and hardware replacement to keep them. When I go in to install the ypipe I would like to do the cat back at the same time because of this

He said "Gibson catback exhaust with muffler delete" assuming that means he has the gibson system but took the muffler out and replaced it with straight pipe? Damn sure sounds like it haha. I actually really like that sound and think I would be ok with something that volume. or slightly quieter. I'm going to message him on insta and see what exactly he's running exhaust wise

Why not go to a muffler shop that does custom systems and see what they suggest. Just tell them what you want the end result to be.

I'm in eastern NC the only custom exhaust is DUAL STRAIGHT PIPES YEEE YEEE BEAU...lol, but actually there aren't any good shops in my area that I would trust advice that they would give. I'll have a talk with a few and see what they say, but I'm going to take it as a grain of salt

Yeah - which may or may not balance out with the fact that he has cats? It sounds pretty reserved for me until he floors it - I personally prefer something that doesn't drone on the highway but gets relatively loud when you really step on it.

Start with a equal length Y-pipe from @Inv4drZm Inv4drZm's Build Thread - maybe one of those DUAL STRAIGHT PIPES YEEE YEEE BEAU shops would build you one if you tell them it's a NASCAR design LOL

I've got the DT long tubes, new magnaflow y-pipes that have cats in them, and the Gibson stainless dual side exit. If anything, mine should be a bit quieter than yours in the end.

The sound is great until 1900-2200 RPM when it gets much louder. It's probably stock-level quiet below 1800 RPM. Maybe even quieter, but I'm literally partially deaf, and wear a hearing aid...

To fix the drone here's my plan:
The Gibson kit came with two tubes for the y-pipe - to - muffler section. One is for v6 and one for v8. I'm going to mock up a Helmholtz / Quarter-Wave Resonator on the extra tube. It's just a dead-end j-tube that the sound waves travel into and then back out perfectly(ish) out of phase to cancel the drone. For our engine, I think it's about 25.5 to 26 inches needed. You cut the hole out of the main tube and then cope the j-tube and weld in place. I've got a coworker that's a very good tig-welder, so I just need to give him the parts once I've mocked it up.

I have the DT headers and y-pipe, no cats, into a Flowmaster Super 50. I love the way it sounds. It's not too loud at all. Definitely no drone on the highway, but stout enough to sound amazing bumping around trails.

My 2 cents, the Magnaflow cat-back is awesome. I have the DT shorties, y-pipe, and the Magnaflow cat-back (plus a resonator to help with drone). I noticed the system was quieted down significantly after the shorties. At idle, it's super mellow and deep, but opens up nicely under acceleration. Honestly, the drone is there, but it's not horrible. At 70, my Ridge Grapplers are louder than the exhaust drone.

Find someone on ebay with it for sale that has a make an offer option, and low ball them by like $200. Saw one listed for $700, offered $400, and got it for $440 with free shipping.

Bonus, imo it's hands down the best looking cat back out there. Gibson side exit looks goofy as hell with the big ass tips, and the whistling I've read about. Magnaflow has none of those problems.

See my signature for the link to the Magnaflow site for the system for our trucks and also the link to the resonator I'm using.
