Hopefully it isn't too bad. Doesn't look like it ran too long like that. Get another head off ebay and slap it on there and I bet it's good.

The beauty is that I have a perfectly good donor head from the engine I pulled off my other 4Runner. If the piston and cylinder check out, I’ll just be out gaskets and time.

Putting closure to the thread.
Pulled the head in 5 hours from start to finish, with a lot of breaks and messing around.
Turns out that the valve took out the rod so the engine is coming out regardless.
There were no signs of valve train damage with the valve cover removed but once I removed the cams I saw that the exhaust valve dropped because the retainer failed. Timing belt was tight and everything was timed properly.
I’m basically out 5 hours of a Saturday. At least the engine will come out a lot easier now with the intake and 1 head off. One thing I did realize is that it’s surprisingly easy and fast to get to the timing belt. I could probably turn it around in 4 hours, but I am an experienced wrencher.

Well, it was worth a shot at least! Gal you got it figured out. Hopefully the motor swap goes easy and you can find one or piece it together on the cheap still.

Would people find it beneficial if I published my time lapse of pulling the head?
How about pulling the engine? The service manuals are very thorough but they do miss some details or don’t explain some well. I know I didn’t find a specific write up with pictures when I pulled the last engine.

Well here’s a link to a YouTube video of me pulling the engine out after following the manual.
After doing it twice, the easiest method for sure is pulling the trans vs trying to leave it on. Do yourself a favor and get a trans jack if you ever have to do this. I think it was a 6 hour process round trip and you can see how slow I’m working on this one lol.
