Factory JBL Amplifier Replacement

Anyone replace the factory JBL amplifier? My sub has blown and I would like to go ahead and just change both.

Goal is to install an amp that fits in the same location. If possible, I'd like to get an idea of how much room there is to work with before disassembly. Has anyone installed an aftermarket 5 channel amp here?

Edit: I already have a new head unit (Kenwood DMX906S and swapped out the front woofers and tweeters with components. Just need to know the size of an amp that would fit in the stock location.

I do not know if this is yours also(YouTube) . Part of the problem is that this system uses some 2 ohm speakers which means mix and match is difficult. The amp is between the head controller and the speakers and most systems today have amp in the head unit.

The harness may be a problem as well, Some stereos have 2 antennas, mine has 1 powered and 1 not, the ones built into my rear side windows are actually powered.

Replacing the system is often reffered to by the folks that have done it as "all or nothing". This includes the harnesses. You may also need to interface with the steering wheel, and navigation system if you have them.

Crutchfield is a company that has a little higher prices but guides you through the process using your runners model and year.

Yeah, I'd agree with the above. Difficult to find components to work with the JBL stuff. I originally planned to do the same, and found the weird impedance of the JBL stuff. I wound up replacing everything, all speakers, two amps, sub in factory box but disconnected all JBL. Had to run new wires to the door speakers as well.

I should have given more information. I am not keeping the JBL equipment. I've already swapped out the fronts and the headunit.

I need a new amp, would just prefer to know how much space i have to work with so i don't have to remove everything, measure, and then buy an amp.

I just replaced my sub with an older model Pioneer. It's definitely an upgrade over the stock JBL, but nothing too crazy. I purchased it a few weeks ago for about $100. There are newer subs by Pioneer, Rockford Fosgate, and Kicker that handle more power, but are more expensive.

You said you upgraded your speakers to components. Are they 2 ohm or 4 ohm? Did you replace the rear door speakers as well?

I recommend spending some time on Crutchfield to get an idea of what amp fits. I believe the Kenwood Excelon X802-5 will fit the factory location. It puts out 50 watts RMS x 4 + 300 watts x 1 at 4 ohms. My sub is only rated for 150 watts RMS and i don't want to blow it. Wish I would have thought of that before buying the sub.

I'm likely going to replace the factory JBL amp with a JL Audio JD400/4. Though it's only a 4 channel amp, I plan on running 4 speakers and the sub. I won't have front to rear fade, but I already lost that when replacing the factory headunit. I'll end up with 50 watts to each speaker and 200 watts to my sub.

I ran into the exact same question a few weeks ago.
I just bought an entire new system, ground-up, everything.
I was pretty dead-set on mounting the new amp in the same location.
And so I had the exact same question.

I downsized the amp I originally was going to buy based on that exact question.
Which was a $600.00 JL 5 channel amp.
Instead I bought a Soundstream Picasso Nano PN 5.65OD.
It looked like it should fit in the same cavity.

So, I don't have a measurement answer for you.
But that's what my logic and research led me to.

And, in the end, I decided to mount it under the passenger seat just because.
I allowed myself to drop the stubborn idea it had to go in the same place.
I 'moved on' past that hard-stop idea.
But, I think the Nano should fit there, that's why I bought it in the first place.

Crutchfield doesn't have the dimension of the JBL, I called and asked already.

My searches on the topic reveal someone measuring the JBL amp itself at 9"x6"x2". Mounting area is 11"x7.5"x2" according to someone else.

There are a few results where folks have shown the amp they used to replace it. Among those were an Alpine PDR-V75 which measures 10.75"x2"x6.5". The other I found was a Pioneer GM-8604 @ 10-3/8" x 2-3/8" x 7-7/8".

Good luck and let us know what you end up using...and show pictures.

OP where do you have the Kenwood X802-5 mounted now? It seems like it might fit the factory location.

I mounted it in the factory location. I did have to trim the cover panel a bit because it did press against it and the entire panel would not fit flush.

Check out my post about the swap out if you haven't already

This is exactly what I just ordered. I plan on putting it under the passenger seat. Did you run new wires? Guess the only thing I don’t know is how to run wires under the carpet or under the center console area (if that’s the best route). Or i guess you could run across the back area close to where rear passengers would have their feet. Just curious what you did.

Has anyone considered trying this by-pass harness? MY2016 4Runner is listed in the compatible vehicle list. I’ve also submitted a call back request from PAC to confirm it works.

Question

With the 5 channel amp you chose, do you happen to have your rear tweeters and your front center channel hooked up at all?

I'm looking to replace a blown 5 channel JL Audio HD900/5 that the previous owner installed in mine, and I would like to have all of the speakers properly hooked up. If you've got it in yours, please give some pointers 🙏🙏

Did you ever figure this out? I just ordered the amp. I don't have the rear tweeters but curious about the front center if you hooked that up?
