There's vent holes in the bottom of the hatch door (black plastic I think). They get clogged after awhile. Use something thin to clean them out or take the inner panel off and clean the debris from the inside. Also make sure the weather stripping is all intact, there should be a horizontal piece that pushes against the rear window. Often it falls off allowing lots of water in, no matter what some gets in on the left & right edges but should be minimal. Below is the replacement piece if needed.

issue is, I don't think the water is coming out of the hatch when he opens it, but instead when he opens the hatch when it's raining the water coming off the top of his T4R goes up over the rubber gasket that is attached to the body above the hatch opening.
I have a somewhat similar issue because I have numerous large trees in my yard and leaves are always stuck and built up behind that rubber gasket if I haven't opened the hatch for a while, causing a similar waterfall affect if I haven't cleaned them out so when it's raining hard and I open the hatch I get a little bit of water coming up and over the gasket, as long as I removed the leaves recently I don't have that issue.
