2019 Wheels on 2008 4Runner & TPMS

So, if I buy a set of 2019 wheels with the original TPMS sensors in them, and put them on a 2008 4Runner, will the new sensors still be recognized by the 2008 4Runner? Or will some sort of reset be necessary? Or are they not compatible?

They wont be. Each tpm sensor in each wheel emits at certain frequency and this frequency needs to be loged into you 4runner. Dealers could do that easily in like 30 mins and it costs $70 here in canada. A tire shop could do that too probably, just call them and double check.

Called three dealers here in SoCal, and all of them told me that reprogramming the 2008 car to recognize the 2019 sensors is not possible. Interestingly enough, I talked to a guy at Big O tire, and he said that they "might" be able to do it, but worse case they could take the sensors from my original 2008 wheels and put them on the 2019 wheels. Just thought there might be an easier solution. Who knows, the dealers all seem clueless to the fact that this is possible.

If I were going through the expense of buying new wheels, I would be installing new tires and having them mounted and balanced I would just get all new sensors. Cents on the dollar with all the other costs involved.

The wheels, tires, and sensors are all brand new from a 2019 Tacoma, so was hoping to use them all turn-key on my '08 4Runner.

I just put sensors from a 2015 in some trd rims today. Tire guy synced them up to my 2007 no problem. I think mid 2006+ are all interchangeable.

Put new OEM (for a 2019) TPMS sensors in my ORP wheels and Discount Tire couldn't get them to sync with my 07 Limited. Haven't tried the dealer yet. Said the spare being the stock sensor might be the issue.

This makes me question if I should just reuse my current TPMS sensors or just get a new set for my 5th gen Trail wheels.

I don't see why it should matter. You can get a replacement sensor that won't be OEM and it should all work.

I did a little looking. Here are the ones I had put in mine. They were a take-off from a 2015 set I picked up off craigslist. I had put them on my '99. Luckily i had the foresite to take the sensors off and store them for the future since the 99 did not need them.

The sensor part was 107J (Part# 42607-33022)

Genuine OEM Tire Pressure Monitoring System Sensor Part# 42607-33022 Fits 2004-2019 Toyota: Up To 35% Off On Every Order And Guaranteed Fit When You Enter Your VIN | OEM Genuine Parts

I can't find the thread, but I think mid 2006 Toyota switched to this 107J sensor. The toyota link above lists the sensor as working on 2006-2019. I searched a couple other toyota stores and they all say the 107J works on 2019 down to 2006.

Discount

Called the guys that make the computer/reader of the tpms sensors, Bartec, and they said that Discount has their own proprietary deal with them. They get a special model 33520 sensor and reader. The universal, dual channel tpms sensor that works both 315 and 433 mhz is the Schrader EZ-sensor 33500. That sensor works in the 4runner and can be programmed by anyone with a Bartec scanner other than Discount.

Thought I would share an update. I bought the 2019 wheels, including the spare. I put the five 2019 wheels on my 2008 4Runner, and all is good. No lights, no nothing. All is good, no reset or anything else needed. Just like the good old days!

Just an FYI...IF you had the original wheels anywhere close by your 4R was still sensing them so no TPMS light triggered, even if you drove away several miles it could take a bit of time for the system to react to them missing, since any new sensor should need to be entered into the ECM for the system to recognize it, the light could come on several days later after the system gives up searching for the signals.

I hope that's not the case with your new wheels...a simple test you can do to know for sure, drive your 4R to a gas station that has air available well away from your old sensors and let the air out of one of the tires to see if it will trigger the light to come on.

Let us know the outcome.

Well, drove it yesterday, far away from the old wheels, and it was fine for a while, then the tire pressure light came on.

After getting back home last night, it went off again, when the vehicle was closer to the old wheels. So perhaps you are right.

Sorry for you to hear I was right.

What I would do next is take it good tire store that has the ability to program the sensors, explain the situation and see if they can get the ECU to recognize the new sensors, it shouldn't be that much $ for them to do it if they can.
