TPMS - 2004 Toyota 4Runner

The TPMS for one of my tires is damaged on my 2004 Toyota 4Runner, so I need to replace it. Are TPMS made especially for each make, model and year or are they interchangable depending on the class of vehicle. Someone who owns a 2010 Tacoma is selling his and I'm wondering if the TPMS for that vehicle is compatible with mine. Thanks all!

The only difference is between the type of wheel the TMPS is used on. For example, I believe it is a 20 degree offset for the alloy wheels while there is a 30 degree offset for the steel wheels.

Basically if they came from an aluminum wheel you're in good shape, only problem is that you need a factory scantool to program them to your vehicle.

You do not need a "Factory Tool" but you do need a tool. Read my post below on how I fixed my TPMS problems.

I did quite a bit of research regarding this since I was going to replace the TPMS in my 2004 when I put new wheels on. I opted to get rid of my TPMS and do the TPMS bypass switch instead.
What I found is that 2004 Toyota TPMS is different from all other TPMS; since TPMS was government mandated in 2005. My understanding is the ECU in 2004s is different than on 2005. On 2005 and later the TPMS sensors are the same across many manufacturers (GM, Toyota etc...).

So your options are to buy new TPMS from the dealer for a couple hundred bucks last I checked, buy used TPMS off a 2004 4runner/Tacoma or get an OEM replacement from Orange Electronic here - Orange Electronic TO35010 Orange Electronic OE Replacement TPMS Sensors

Message - Good to know. So my fix would not work in this case. If so I would disable the stupid light and check my tires on a regular basis.

It looks like they use the same TMPS sensor according to this chart:

Toyota Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems

Model number: PMV-107J

I thought they used the same TPMS as well according to that chart... Wondering why mine was a different model?
See here: Toyota 4Runner Forum - message's Album: parts4sale - Picture

Also this old thread of mine... TPMS Model#
Here's the chart I found...

That's good to hear actually, last I had checked not many aftermarket TPMS tools communicated well with Toyota. I would give this a try, the '04 ECU isn't too much different, but then again I've only been using the factory tool.

Glad to know that you know have other options than taking it to the dealer for simple stuff, we charge too much for a lot of what we do and not a lot goes to the technician.

For what it is worth I had a sensor go bad and the light on the dash of my 06 was flashing. I brought it in to my local discount tire, they diagnosed it, replaced the sensor and registered the new sensor with the TPMS box. It was 114 out the door, not bad considering I did not have to go across town to the dealer.

And prone to stupid $1 sub-component failures that are only repairable by investing $600 in a whole new part and $1500 in labor!!

Had the same concern as the OP. I was able to replace a faulty '04 early version TPMS (model # PMV1017; OEM part # 42607-35010) with the later version (model # PMV107J; OEM part # 42607-06011) and register it with the ATEQ Quickset. The later 107J version is cheaper and more available on eBay than the rarer and more expensive 1017.
Remember to wake up a new TPMS out of hibernation using a pressure drop (there is a TSB out there about this) if you don't have the factory scan tool.

Good to know kmvreter! I had thought I was only able to use the older version of TPMS. I may just have to pick up a set of the newer models and get them programmed versus disabling my TPMS via the bypass switch mod.
