37s + 2WD non e-locker rear diff gearing request

Well it seems this is a tightly kept industry secret, or the search function and google have failed me completely. I have a 2003 V8 2WD on 35s with the stock gearing. I normally see 16.5mpg city and 14.5mpg highway. I really need help finding gearing for the rear diff.

I'm only doing it now because it's almost time to replace the 35s and i'm most likely upgrading to 37s. This is my daily driver, almost exclusively highway mileage, no off-roading. I drive it like a grandma on a Sunday. Call it a street queen, mall crawler, etc.. I'm totally ok admitting it's strictly built for appearance

With that being said, I cannot find ANY info online about upgrading a non e-locker rear diff, nor can I find a kit. From what I understand, I need to find a 29 spline non e-locker 4.88 ring and pinion gear set, then a master install kit. Someone suggested Nitro Gearing but I'd gladly take other suggestions.

I'd like to get this ordered and installed ASAP, so any help is appreciated.

Call these guys. They are considered one of the best in the country. I've never done one, but a 3rd swap is considered the quickest and most cost effective way to do a gear change. You can buy the gears and tear down the 3rd, but it's not something I will trust to just anyone or try to do myself. Specialty tools are needed to do it properly as well.

Seconded. ECGS is where I'm going if I ever need to get a new 3rd or want to put in a TruTrac…

4.88 sounds right for that size tire when compared to stock.

thirded ^^ ECGS is where I will be going when I regear down the road. Planning on using a 8.2" in the rear so I'll be regearing that and not my 8" but the answer is still the same

I know this is off topic, I'm sorry, but I'm curious on how you plan to fit 37's? I thought the body mount, even when chopped, restricted tires to 35's

He has a 2wd, allowing him to run a spindle lift too, he has way more height than most haha. Also you can tub these things if it gets bad enough

It probably stays on the street so the suspension isn't ever flexed. That coupled with a large lift.

That said it's not impossible to run 37's, relocating the body mount is surprisingly easy. The expensive part is beefing up the rest of the drivetrain.

Yes it’s 2WD and I have about 9” lift. No Rubbing when daily driving. I tested the suspension flex and while tucking the 35s, it’ll contact the rear bumper before hitting the bump stop. When I go up to 37s, I’ll do some measuring and add a longer bump stop to prevent anything from getting damaged.

As for buying a preassembled setup, this is my daily so I don’t want much down time. I occasionally take my other car to work but it’s built for racing so the seats get uncomfortable quick! I have a local shop that specializes in Toyota’s, I plan to have them do the installation. I want to make sure it’s done correctly, they’ve done most of the maintenance to this truck and they've been great

One more vote for ECGS. I just regeared both ends of my V8 4wd Sport with 3rd members from them. Great tech advice up front, straightforward shipping both ways, and the diffs run like they were built in the Toyota factory.

Swapping out the rear 3rd is about a 4 hour job for a competent first timer, less once you've done it a time or two. A tranny jack helps unless you have a strong buddy.

I was going with ECGS at first but decided to go to a local shop to install my gears.

My rear diff is still my factory 2wd 3:73 non locker one but now with 4:56 Nitro gears & ARB air locker but my front after 4wd conversion is a V8 4wd diff with 4:56 Nitro gears.

True, he does say it's a mall crawler

Interesting, relocating the body mount is something I haven't heard of yet. Thanks for the input!

Yeah, now that I see he says he's got 9" of lift, it makes a little more sense
