Thoughts on resonator delete?

Ive been considering the resonator delete and exhaust rerouting for a few years now since I’m often riding around with the back window down and whenever I really step on the gas it smells like rotten eggs in the cabin.

I’m nearing old fogie status and really don’t want to add any additional loudness or drone to the 4Runner.

For those of you who have done this mod, are you happy with the results? Would you do it again? Do you have any issues with droning on the highway when cruising along with cruise control?

I relocated mine. Best of both worlds IMHO.

Mine is now before the muffler and after the y-pipe merge. Had a shop weld it basically between the two exhaust hangers.. I did it on a Gibson side exits exhaust and it's quieter than stock now. I did do a 1/4 wave drone-delete, but I'd bet the resonator and stock muffler will probably be fine alone since there's no drone on the factory system.

I will say that while the side exit helps a lot, the biggest help was new cats in the y-pipe. Well, scratch that, the biggest help was removing the worn out cats in the exhaust manifold when I did long tubes. Seems like the rotten egg smell was almost created by the bad cats rather than a result of poor filtration, if that makes sense. I'm running on 2 new cats with LESS smell than the 4 old ones.

Not suggesting you do the same mods, I'm just saying that rerouting will only fix about half of the instances where you notice the smell.

FWIW, I'm a windows down guy, and I don't like loud exhaust at cruising speeds or rotten egg smell. I've got the rear window down anytime it's not pouring rain or way too cold.

ive researched this and it doesnt change the sound or performance is the consensus.

maybe one instance someone thought it was louder but the majority dont.

when i step up my tools game im going to make the cut. my concern was it affecting MA inspection laws on modified exhaust.

I cut mine off the first week I owned the truck. Not sure that it did anything different.

I cut mine off as it kept acting like a plow on the trails. I routed the exhaust out the side and did not notice any sound or performance impact. Glad it's gone. Go for it! Save it and weld it back on for inspection if needed.

I had a shop remove the resonator and reroute out the side.
I noticed the smallest change in sound. Had a little more meat to it and a slight more drone at around 2k Rpm.

Since then I have added a Flowmaster 50 muffler in which gave the V8 the sound I wanted but also increased the drone quite a bit.
I've learned to live with it and this thing is just getting noisier with every item I had.

Cut it off and don't look back! I got ride of mine a few years ago and couldn't notice any difference in sound. Routed out the side helped a good deal with the sulfur smell too

We have different engines, but I had a similar issue. I wanted a little extra tone to the exhaust but after doing a few things it was just too much and the drone was annoying as hell. I added a Vibrant Ultra Quiet Resonator after the muffler and the drone is gone. I’m honestly amazed at just how much it did tone it down. I have it mounted almost vertically on the backside of the rear axle with a side exit exhaust so it’s tucked up and out of the way.

It’s frankly almost too quiet now, but I’ll take that over the drone every time.

So if you’re looking to keep the general tone of your exhaust but want the drone dialed back and general loudness down a notch or two, I’d highly recommend the ultra quiet resonator.

Mine got smashed on a camping trip, so I cut it off right where it comes over the axle, never looked back. I don't drive with the rear window down, so I've never had a problem with smell, and it did not change the sound.

I did the same, just preemptively.

I just cut my resonator off this past weekend and welded a 2.5” 90° elbow out the side. No noticeable gain in mpg, performance or sound. I can’t notice any drone at freeway speeds due to the fact my roof rack, light bar and tires are noisy.

For anyone searching in the future, the resonator delete and exhaust re-route is a must do.

The resonator delete made absolutely no difference in sound with the v6. I’m honestly not sure what frequency it’s designed to block out, but I can’t tell any difference with th windows up or down

And the routing out exhaust out the side instead of rear makes a HUGE difference in regards to the cabin exhaust smell when riding around with the rear window down

It also looks much cleaner in the rear too with a chrome tip instead of that ugly black tailpipe

Cost was $125 at local shop and took them 20 mins tops

Chopped mine off after the axle so it dumps down. I had intended to reroute it to the side, but I never found an exhaust I liked. Hasn't caused any issues under the vehicle having been like that for years, the V8 sounded a little throatier at full tilt after the chop, but nothing I would write home about.

I accidentally backed into a rock that bent my exhaust and knocked it off the hanger. To have it fixed I had it turned and the resonator removed. It's a bit more throaty without it, but it's marginal

This is the route I went.. a bit backwards from a resonator delete.. I actually did a muffler delete at first and left just the resonator, it was too raspy at full throttle being a V8. Recently what I did was buy a flowmaster exhaust, chopped it way back just past the Y-pipe, and built the muffler/resonator combo with a 45 degree down turn tube. The sound is louder, cleaner and overall phenomenal. because of where it dumps there is 0 in cabin smell. If you have your own welder you could do something similar for a little over 100 dollars
