Got a new head unit, (after exhaustive search)

When I got my 05 4R about a month ago I really didn't even think about replacing the low end single din JVC in it. Then I was in a Walmart in Waynesville, NC and saw they had a nice looking Sony unit reduced from $299 to $196. I thought about it but didn't make the move. A couple weeks later I saw the same unit, Sony XAV-AX100 dropped to $154. But, upon looking the sales clerk said they were discontinued and out of stock. (All they had on the shelf was the box.) After this I started researching and found this unit on a lot of "best unit" lists and with really good reviews. Also found out that about a year ago this unit listed for $499. I was determined to find one of these at this point. So in the span of two weeks I checked about 12 Walmarts trying to find one, to no avail. (I physically visited 12 stores. Impossible to find anything online or by calling). Then yesterday I was back in the automotive department at my local store and I noticed that they had put the box back on the shelf. I got a different employee to look and they found it! I don't know if I'm more excited about getting a pretty nice unit for my 4R or for getting such a good deal on it. Now I've got to order the installation stuff and a camera and I'll be all set. I'll be able to use the steering wheel controls and have backup camera and use the navigation and play music from my library through apple car play on my iphone. Just wanted to share my good news. Like I told my wife, I could spend $150 on a $150 unit or in this case Spend $150 on a nearly $500 unit. Pretty good bang for the buck.

Congrats. I have installed 2 Sony CarPlay stereos so far, and they are great units. The first I did was last year with the XAV-AX1000 in my daughter’s Camry. We paid around $299 for the AX1000, but this year around the holidays, I was able to score the upgraded AX5000 for my 4Runner for the same price (I think I actually paid $289 from Crutchfield, but that included all the harnesses and dash adapter). When I first started researching these units, I read a lot about the AX100, and it was definitely on my short list, but for various reasons I ended up getting the newer gen models. Definitely happy with the Sonys though!

Totally agree. I installed mine a couple days ago and I am extremely happy with it. I love all the features, (car play etc), but what blew me away was the difference in sound quality between this and the cheap JVC unit it replaced. I looked at the AX1000 as well but getting this on clearance for $154 was the deciding factor. Plus I preferred the rear USB. At first I wasn't sure about that but it came with a 3 ft extension cord and I installed a stationary USB port in one of the empty blind plugs on the console. Looks almost factory. This is the plug: Amazon.com: MOTONG Male to Female USB Power Port Socket Adapter for Toyota VIGO(42 22mm): Industrial & Scientific
Best $12 I spent on the whole deal.

I installed that same port for mine as well, but used one of the blanks to the left of the steering wheel, and placed a vent magnetic holder with my phone and a super short cable to plug it in. Works perfectly and is easy to grab on my way out of the truck. The rear usb cable also had no issue reaching there, which was a plus too. The AX1000 I put in my daughter’s car only has a front usb, which she doesn’t mind, and finds convenient for plugging in, but I wanted the rear inputs for a cleaner install.

I used to be able to post pics until photobucket screwed with my account, now they are holding my photos hostage unless I pay up, which isn’t going to happen, and unfortunately I never learned how to post pics without using that service.

I looked at those blanks for the USB as well but I didn't think about mounting the phone over there. Not sure I could get used to using the phone with my left hand, (not that I use it much while driving). For me it works better in the center so my wife can charge her phone at times too. I totally agree on the rear USB though. The JVC I took out had the front port and I hated the cord hanging out the front of it. Also, I had my Garmin GPS on the windshield right above it with the power cord from it hanging down too. Now I'm using Waze with the AX100 and all the cords are gone. Much, much cleaner. Now I've just got to install the backup camera and decide on a phone mount and location.
