255/75-17 too narrow?

I just put a pair of 265/70-17 KO2s and TRD wheels on my 4R. I chose them since they are decent off road and on road manners are really good.

However, I got to thinking. I have a pair of 255/75-17 original BFG M/T from my '18 Rubicon collecting dust. What if I threw these on my stock wheels and how would they work if I decided to take a trip offroad vs the KO2s. Only cost would be to mount them up. I think I would need wheel spacers though since the stock wheels are set in pretty far? Thoughts?

2.5" lift will be in next week so I think they should clear since they are so narrow. On the plus side, I won't destroy my new TRD wheels.

dude, run those things! a lot of people including me run that size and they are great. the weight is awesome and for an IFS axle vehicle it almost makes more sense combined with the v6 at least vs lugging around heavy wide options. like atvs lol

i wouldn't push it with extreme wheel setup unless i was on solid front axle and the tall skinnys are a great option.

jealous of your rubicon btw, id be running 35 or 37s on that thang.

Get a set of takeoff wheels and have them mounted; they will sell if you choose not to keep them...

I only put 33s (or maybe they are 34s) on. I can't bring myself to beat on this thing offroad so it mostly sees pavement

I am keeping an eye out for a clean used 2 door that I wouldn't care as much about destroying.

Just post on Craigslist or Facebook Classifieds that you'd like to trade for some stock 17's. Maybe even a member here would be down.

Looks wise, I think it visually isn't as "Beefy" as many would like.

Main issue is that throwing on 32" MT's are a lot of weight, and the compound itself leads to all round worse on-road manners.
Louder, less grippy (compared to OEM sized HT or AT's like the K02 on pavement), harsher ride due to stiffer sidewalls).

I run the cheapo 32" (non MT, Goodyear Wrangler 255-75-17 takeoffs from Jeeps) and for all intents and purposes, they are a lousy tire. The reduced (from 265) width combined with nothing special tire compound = very lousy hard/threshold braking. Just the weight transfer alone to the front makes the rear end very light and squirmy on the v8.

Edit: not that much heavier, only 2lbs heavier at full tread comparing load range C of 265-70-17 KO2's to the load range C in 255-75-17 KM2's

Wait, so you bought a Rubicon edition Jeep and feel better about keeping it on pavement?

As for 255's that's a great size tire, I run them on limited 18's with 25mm backapace. Those TRD wheels are like 4mm BS? If so they will sit perfect almost even with fender flair.

Well I would just swap them on for offroad use and keep the TRD/KO2 for every day since they look bad ass and handle roads well.

Well, mostly. Always wanted a Wrangler and I had the money at the time to get it. The JLs just started hitting the showrooms and dealers were offloading the JKs with pretty big discounts to make room for the JLs so I pulled the trigger. Most of the offroad parks by me mean mud holes and tight trails which end up making a mess out of the vehicle. I started having second thoughts about beating up a brand new wrangler so I figured I would just beat up one of my 13 year old 4runners instead. Hell, I don't even drive it in winter since I have the 4runners and my truck. The FJ and Golf stay indoors as well during winter months.

good for you with that fleet. the front and rear lockers/a rubicon wants to claim tight trails and mudholes. keep it for the long term. to each their own. i love rubicons.

That Rubicon is a cheat code off road! As for the size 255/75/17 I think it's a great size and tire for the 4runner, did extremely well in Snow, mud, rocks, not too loud on road. I would still be running that size if I didn't have to park next to my 93 "rust bucket" Wrangler already on 33's soon to be 35's/37's. It makes the 4runner not even look lifted, so I went up a size.

Thank you and I know. That's why I went Rubicon. My XJ and Tacoma with open axles did well, but sometimes my buddies with lockers just walked through the same areas I struggled with. I have my eye out for an older Rubicon that will take place of the stock 4runner when it pops up. Then I will have the best of both worlds. A 4Runner I can wheel, and a 2 door wrangler I can wheel and a 4door rubicon I can go to the mall in

I am a fan... 255/75/17 has been an awesome size in terms of fitment and performance.
