Fighting Insurance Over Windshield

State Farm won't replace OEM with OEM. I am considering changing all my policies based on this.

I would consider an ultra high quality non OEM, or better, an OEM not marked as OEM, but the initial research indicates a mess has brewed in windshield glass.

PGW bought PPG? PGW is sometimes cheap?

How do I find a quality non OEM option? Admittedly, the OEM Toyota glass is a rip off at +$550 over their "free replacement" PGW option.

Where is the source of good data on this topic, such as, how to find quality American or German glass, what are good specs, etc...?

Insurance companies are not required by state law to replace parts with OEM parts unless you have a endorsment that you are paying extra for that allows OEM parts up to a certain mileage. After that is over they " can " use aftermarket parts unless you can prove they are inferior to OEM.

OEM toyota glass is made by PG. I had my windshield replaced in both my 4runners recently and i asked for PG and i got them. If you ask for OEM you can get it but will have to pay the difference.

Doesn't matter what company you are with, it's not free...I got a pretty good agent. She informed me of OEM endorsement as an optional add which I agreed to pay for.

It's already paid for itself too because I had to get a new windshield a well.

The glass alone was over $700, + the Safelite labor. The other fun part is I also got Toyota to give me a new dash under the recall. It's feels like a brand new truck again.

I just had my windshield replaced for $250 at a local shop using a PGW (Pittsburg Glass Works) brand, which I think is also used by Toyota, not sure. Both of my Toyotas use PGW glass. My Mercedes uses Sekurite (spell?) glass which I think is also avail for Toyotas in some market.

Pittsburgh Glass Works

Anyway, stay away from Safelite crap.

PPG = Pittsburgh Plate Glass (or whatever)
PGW = bought out PPG windshield business (or whatever)

Are you saying you got Toyota to honor the dash recall recently? My dash didn't have any issues until maybe a year ago, but I think that was well outside the recall window.

Negative... Time flies and still feels recent to me but looking at my records, it was completed in 1st quarter of 2017

I'm not looking forward to having this fight. I knew Jeep windshields were notorious for cracking, but not the T4Rs. Had mine for a week and already took a rock to the front windshield that took out a good chunk. It looks repairable this time, but this is not a good start.

Correct me if I am wrong, but your glass shop is your choice… So couldn't you go to the Toyota dealer and have them do the work? That way you are assured of OEM and bypass the insurance company's stigma.

You mentioned Toyota uses Pittsburgh Glass Works. Is there a way to match the "over the counter" PGW part number to the part they supply Toyota to confirm they're the same?

I dont have that info. The glass shop i use im pretty friendly with due to my old job and the amount of windshields i have installed with my car and families cars.

I asked them about OEM windshields because i know the issues with aftermarket ones with the electronics used today and fitment. They did all the research for me and was able to get the PGW glass installed with ins co authorization. They showed me that PGW was the OEM supplier to toyota.

Hey there and good day. How long ago did you get your dash replaced? Is it still possible to get that done through Toyota?

The Enhanced Warranty for a dash replacement ended in May 2017, so no you can't get a free dash replacement any longer.

That being said if a Toyota dealer can still get a replacement dash assembly they will be happy to replace your's but it will cost around $1200+/-, or you can get the dash and replace it yourself for around $700+/-.
