Rebuidling 4.0

My son's 2008 V6 4.0 spun a rod bearing. I'm now starting the process to try to rebuild. The truth begins tomorrow when my machinist tells me if the block can be salvaged (bored).

4.0

Almost caught it before damaging the rod cap. I'm pretty sure the crank can be ground but I'm not sure how or if a rod can be salvaged. Does anyone know a good source for used engine parts?

I hope the block is salvageable, this will be an awesome project to follow. Best of luck man, you're gonna kill it.

edit: probably should have watched my word choice on this one. It was meant as words of encouragement...

We get it!

Dropped off the block today. My only choice of oversized pistons is .020 so lets hope it cleans up. Ordered pistons & rings should be here Thursday and the shop can fit.

Still waiting on the crankshaft but I did get the block after boring .020 oversized. Clearance with the new pistons .003
I need to order a new rod, the one pictured earlier.

Now I'm chasing gasket sets and timing chain, guides and tensioners.

Anyone with experience with aftermarket kits?

One of the tensioner wear pads broke and I can tell someone has been in the timing cover so I don't know what's OE and what's after market. Most Toyota parts have Toyota part numbers, my timing chain components do not.

Just wondering if that why I have a broken wear pad as its inferior/ bogus parts.

This sounds like a really good father/son project. I have two daughters and they're both grown so I wouldn't have the opportunity you have. Hope all goes well. As far as a used part source the best one I know of is car-part.com. It's not too likely that they'll have individual engine parts though. But, if for instance you end up needing a crank or a head or something you could possibly find a used engine core with those parts in rebuildable condition. Just curious, how many miles on your engine? Good luck with it. I'll be following your progress.

Miles??? My son bought the 08 in Missouri at a little used car lot while he was in the Army. The advertised miles 87K and he bought it last year. The miles were BS. Front bearings were crap and I can now see wetting around the rear bearing hub.
Now that I'm going thru the motor it appears it was swapped or at a minimum removed. I think it was swapped because what I found while removing the oil pan. First, the little oring was split on the dip stick tube as it goes into the oil pan. Next, some brilliant so called mechanic drove either the wrong bolt or the wrong stud right through the threaded boss in the aluminum oil pan. I found the piece of the boss in the pan. RTV everywhere...
Why does someone swap pans? I think they found a non 4x4 motor and had to swap the pans.
Found a broken stud on the exhaust at one of the cats and instead of repairing it the some how got a nut to catch maybe a thread or 2.
Some of the electrical clips which was one of the most difficult parts to separate, some where not attached to holding brackets properly or at all.

Today is parts cleaning day. Starting with the heads. One is disassembled and now prepping to lap the valves and for the most part everything looks pretty good. Before I took it part I pressurized the cylinders I had a couple cylinders with leaky intake or exhaust valves so the clean up is needed.

How about losing a keeper? I was replacing springs in-car one time and a keeper fell into the oil passage, I lucked out and was able to retrieve it by sticking a magnetic pickup tool through it...what a relief not having to drop the oil pan LOL
