So the user Johns_06Yota got me pretty inspired to do a black interior makeover and as well as another forum on here to do the noise cancellation addition. I chose to go for it because I don't have anything else to do.

Products used:
Rustoleum Flat Black Acrylic Spray Paint
Purple Power Degreaser
Kilamat 50 Mil thick noise-canceling foam
Pressure Washer
Duplicolor Black Vinyl and Fabric Dye
(I used a carpet fabric dye but that did not go over so easy)
And Time youre gonna need some of that


First order of business was to get the carpet out, but there was a whole lot of panels to get off first, used bunch of different sites and forums to find the bolts, but its pretty self explanatory. Once that was off it was really hard part gone.

Second I cleaned every panel, metal piece, and dirt anywhere on the car itself or the panels with the purple power so the kilamat could adhere better and its dirt I dont want that.

I took the carpet out and threw it over my fence because I didnt want water to just sit in there after I wash it out, I even threw a little degreaser and brushed it into the hard stains and just washed it out, my washer is only about 1700 PSI so im not damaging it.

The molding from the carpets that stick to the metal body of the car comes off very easy with a metal wire wheel, grabbed one from lowes and it came off way quicker than any other tool I tried.

After the carpet was washed I used a Bissell carpet cleaner handheld tool to get rid of the extra water sitting on it, but I bet a hot Saturday and your carpet will dry pretty fast.

Save yourself from the RIT Fabric Dye it did not work for me. It made a really dark purple shade but dried black, but even then it never really adhered and it would always come off on my hand when I rubbed it and this was following the instructions and letting it sit for multiple days.

Over the course of this I applied the Kilamat to every big panel and made sure to get almost every inch possible using extra cut outs and small pieces because I had tons of sheets, 2 boxes of it, so I intended on using it all...

My makeshift paint booth was a moving blanket hanging from screws I put in the wall and a bin top as a base, gave everything a minimal two coats after i cleaned them all off. I attempted a bondo repair on some scratches but had my speculations, and I was right, doesnt match the texture and is just not worth it for a small reward. (I used the rustoleum here because my first duplicolor can was a dud and I said I dont want to happen again so I got that and used duplicolor later on the carpet).

Im a dumbass and got lazy and sprayed the carpet black in the driveway, doesnt come off easily. but the carpet looked great, scrub it with a brush after applying 5 min later to get the fibres soft and fresh and alternate the spray directions (vert and horz).

For all those doors, or any part that I didn't want any black on because its leather or something I don't want black I used masking tape, duct tape(masking doesnt stick to leather), and butcher paper from Walmart.

I recommend using bags and labeling them for all the bolts and screws, if you don't organize them you'll probably regret it.

I bought a set of Katzkin seat skins before I even got my 4Runner and have been holding off on installing them since I want to swap my gray interior to black by doing pretty much what you did here. My plan was to buy aftermarket carpet that was black, dye/paint the lower door trims and plastics, then swap over the seat skins to finish off the interior.

Looking forward to more pics as you finish it all up, are you doing anything with the seat skins at this time?

Yea I planned on just getting the leatherseats.com kits and do it, not a fan of the seat covers themselves, but yea in the coming time when I get a little extra funds, this all was pretty low budget

Agreed, I'm not a fan of seat covers, so I picked up replacement skins.

I ordered some of the flat black to use on the headliner trim for my Volvo that I'm waiting to re-wrap the headliner, and then to use the rest on the 4Runner because yours looks like exactly what I want.

Assuming for the lower dash you removed most of the lower panels and painted them and just re-installed once dry?

Go for it, learned a lot doing it and the outcome was even better than I expected.

Been thinking about installing dynamat/killmat to quiet the ride a bit.

About how long does it take to remove / reinstall the interior?

Any tips on tools or proper order? (I think I remember reading another post that said something along the lines of start at the back of the rig and work bottom to top?)

@BigMike18 How much Kilimat did you use? I know you said two boxes, but was it two boxes of 25sqft, 50sqft? etc..

Two boxes of 80 mil thick 36 sqft from ebay

Took maybe 5-7 hours, I work at my own pace taking breaks to eat and stuff but I started back by the cargo area and just kinda moved forward, only took the headliner off when I was ready to put kilamat on there.

As for tools, I used a panel clip for a good bit of time, sound deadening roller, and Dewalt drill with a socket set, and usual socket.
