2004 Sport Edition V8 - Subwoofer

Anyone ever pull this out and replace it with a factory unit? Any issues with that?

Thanks much.

This has to be the quickest and most efficient answer to any post I've made on any Toyota Forum, ever.

That's saying a lot because I always get good replies on the Toyota Forums for many years.

I opted to just disconnect it and have an 8in sub under the front seat. Fits and hits hard enough for me. I also put component speakers in the front, which did require a small bracket fabrication for the tweeters (factory bracket is part of the tweeter, so it’s unusable) It’s easy enough to do with a piece of wood.

As you have a JBL system I'm sure it wont be quite as simple, but I just installed an 8' kicker comp shallow mount and a 400w amp into/onto the factory box and it works great, hardest part was getting the subwoofer mounted securely, as the diameter of the factory JBL speaker was slightly larger, and had a different hole pattern.

Mind me asking, but what brand/model did you go with?

How was the fitment, any issues?

And did you do one under each seat or just one under the driver or passenger?

I picked up a while ago a JBL sub enclosure from a junkyard. Plan is to add decent amount of bass to the system without encroaching on cargo area. Still have to find a sub specific side panel (donor was obviously wrecked and panel was unusable).

Thanks!

I went the cheap-route with the sub because of budget, and yeah only 1 under the drivers seat. But I see no reason why you can’t put one under the passenger seat. (Actually, it’s kinda on my extended to-do list to have one under each seat.)

Model of 8” low profile sub I bought: Audiopipe APLP-800 (aplp800) 400W Active Low Profile Security Check

Fits great, sounds good. I’m 6’ 2” for the record, so it’s not like I’ve got the seat jacked way up. The sub height is 3” 3/16” and fits, which did surprise me, so rest assured anything less than that will fit too. Also I can’t speak to installation woes because I had an audio place do that part, but he told me there were no problems getting it to fit. He may have had to take the drivers seat off but don’t quote me on that (it was a while ago).

If price isn’t so much an issue for you, only space, I’d get the JBL BassPro SL2 It’s lower profile and I’ve heard good things about the JBL low profile subs. I bet one of those under each seat would sound niice

I can get you some pictures later of how it looks under seat.

Thanks very much for that detailed reply, especially on the measured height. That will give me something to work with and I'll scope out that JBL you mentioned. As long as it fits I'm good from there and will probably do both sides at once. My daily is a MINI and the BMW's/MINI's put the mid-bass/subs under the front seats, and to me sounds good for most of the time. Not chest thumping, but good enough for me. Trying for the near same results.
