Looks like you reuse the existing OEM pipe, in the other illustration I posted it's called the "Exhaust Front Pipe Assy". Walker doesn't offer a replacement part but Rock Auto lists two brands that do

Here's a thread about the 2003-2004 style Magnaflow Y-pipe by the way Worst Y-pipe Design ever - 2003 V8 4runner

I saved a photo from the thread before Photobucket decided to charge people - OEM setup vs. Magnaflow

After talking to the exhaust guy, I won't need to buy that "Front Pipe" / "Exhaust Front Pipe Assy" which I believe would be the only thing left OEM, but they said they are more than able to put a new stainless steel pipe in there, including the hole for the O2 sensor.

Excellent! The shop-fabbed will probably have smoother bends, those two listed in Rock Auto are all crinkled.

New Exhaust Installed

Got my 4Runner back from the exhaust shop

It sounds so much better, especially paired with the K&N!

I do get the droning at ~2100 RPM which is unfourtnate for going around corners and stop/go traffic, and also when going 70-80MPH. But everywhere else it sounds perfect. I'm willing to bet other people wouldn't even consider what I am talking about as 'droning' at all.

Here's what my mechanic said about the headers:
  • 2 studs broke off in head and had to be extracted
  • Header holes not lining up with head
  • Had to remove headers 4 times on drivers side to get all studs to start
  • Passenger side header also had fit issues

He did the install solo to my knowledge. He opted to not put the locks on the stage 8 header bolts until after I drive it a few hundred miles and it needs to be re-torqued.

I am getting a dreaded CEL: P0154 - O2 Sensor Circuit No Activity Detected Bank 2 Sensor 1. That's the upstream A/F sensor for the passengers side header I believe. So I don't think I need the O2 spacers, which are for downstream (as @4RunnerAquasport pointed out). I'm hoping the sensor just needs to be wiggled or something.. maybe I got a bad Denso? Not sure.

Video 1 - Startup / idle sound - YouTube

Video 2 - Phone on dash; all windows down - YouTube

Hey @JONBOY345 do you have that Vibrant Resonator right before the Magnaflow muffler? How's the sound? Is it just as loud everywhere else for the most part, and the resonator gets rid of the droning? Would love your thoughts since I realized we have a pretty similar exhaust setup minus the Y-Pipe.

P.S. I sold my old cats to RRCats, $103/ea for the manifold cats and $73 for the Y-Pipe cat.

Sounds good. I vae the 06 v8 and am thinking of doing similar. I have the doug thorleys ready but honestly just want stock exhaust setup beyond that. I dont want loud and cant stand droning at all.

What did this whole thing cost you? Especially curious on the labor.

I imagine that just doing the headers won’t add too too much noise. If you’re keeping everything else stock you should be good there.

My labor bill was $950 which includes headers, “front pipe” fabrication, welds, and install of the bolt-on cat-back. I’ve seen folks on the forums talking about labor quotes upwards of $2k just for the headers. I shopped around a few shops, a couple wouldn’t do headers and one I got a ~$1.2k estimate. It all depends where you’re located I think.

@j4x4v8 sensors are new? where did you source the AF sensors? You might already know there has been complaints about Denso bootleg parts out there. Do you have your old ones you could swap out? And of course check the connector and wiring as well. Sounds amazing, way better than mine. My old muffler is getting a louder drone by the day.

Thanks man! Yep they’re new, and unfortunately I found out about the bootleg parts after I ordered them from Amazon. I just checked and it was sold by Amazon services, not a 3rd party seller, but still a cause for concern if the market is being flooded with fakes. I may have accidentally left the old sensors on the manifold converters I sent to get scrapped (oops)

Sorry to hear that. From what I can tell, the dealer or Rock Auto might be your only option. Rock Auto being much cheaper if they are in fact genuine Denso. Quick search showed $175 for the right front on a dealer site, ridiculous. Try a quick search of the pick and pull yard in your area if you have the time. You might get lucky and find one that works for pennies on the dollar. Lexus 470s might work as well as Tundras. Just my opinion, but we need to weed out the crap that's getting sent to this country and bring some viable production back here as well. The management of these online stores don't care about QC, just bottom line. Sick of these people that compromise everything in the name of acquiring their next Mercedes. Good Luck!!

Looks great. I really like the look and sound of the Magnaflow kit. Added bonus is that it's a straight-through muffler unlike other options out there.

I do have the Vibrant Resonator before the muffler and it did noticeably help with the droning. It didn't eliminate it completely but certainly took it down a notch or two. As both the muffler and the resonator burn-in (due to the fiberglass packing material) it will get a bit louder. It happens so gradually you'll hardly even notice the change unless you compare some recordings of it.

Here's the link to the post I made about the Catback project: https://www.toyota-4runner.org/3253598-post32290.html

Note I had OEM Manifolds, and y-pipe at the time of the post.

That said, if I were to do it again, I'd get a 1/4 Wave Resonator instead. I took it to a shop recently to have them look at that, and they said there wasn't room to do one.

But, dirty deeds has a helmholtz resonator they make... Might be worth calling them to see if it works on our trucks: Helmholtz Resonator - DIRTY DEEDS INDUSTRIES

Wow $950 is cheap... I'm getting a quote for $1500 up in NoVA. Which shop did you have it done at in Richmond?

Hi I need help with this as well in the same boat but V6 2004

My left rear catalytic converter has gone bad and I live in NY. I was thinking of using Bosal but they don't comply with NY/CA standards. I have to get something that does. I was thinking Magnaflow but I don't know if aftermarket CAT would remove the CEL. Can someone please advise on what my options are in NY. I don't want to use Universals because I don't want to depend on the quality of the weld job. Thanks in advance.

I might have to take mine there to get it done. How long did it take and did you go back home then go back once they were done?
