Towing with my sport

So I use my 06 sport in my business to tow a 7x14 open trailer. With the trailer and gear it must be about 2500lbs. I am looking to get a 8.5x16 enclosed and a bit nervous about towing it. My 06 is a v8 and I tore out the xtres system and had Toyota installl bilstein 5100 and I run day star lift kit in it as well. Installed a trailer brake and I have the factory tow package with 7 pin already. Any advice anyone can give me? I know by the numbers in I should be fine from what I have read 7000lbs is the trailering capacity.

The v8 is rated for 7000 lbs. I have towed 4000 with mine no problem.

Airbags in the rear will help.

+1 for airbag helpers. I installed the airlift 1000s and ran 15 psi towing my boat which weighs 2500lbs.

I have the V6 lifted on Bilsteins with toytec springs. It definitely kept the vehicle level and felt more stable.

Shown here eith 10psi...I preferred 15

I have a 2004 V8 Limited and tow a 7 X 16 from time to time and the rear will sag, I also suggest doing rear air bags, also towing in 4th gear to stop the trans from hunting gears/down shifting, I would also recommend a OBD2 dongle and app or similar device to monitor the trans fluid temperature and try not to go much over 200 degrees too often but lower is recommended.

The trans temperature light will not come on until around 230 degrees and at that temperature you have already burnt the fluid which is the worst thing for auto transmissions!!

@Utopia

I agree with @AuSeeker about the Trans temp being more of an idiot light than a useful warning feature. I use my 2006 sport for towing my hardside popup trailer (~3200 LBS dry) with a lifted OME suspension with taller tires. I use the ScanGuage OBDII scanner to keep a close eye on the trans temp as well other metrics when towing.

I went this route after we burned up the trans in my Dad's Ford towing the trailer around Wyoming the year before.

I am just towing around town making several stops usually about 12 per day. So no highway or long trips. My longest trip would be about 15 minutes at
Most.

So in running the numbers I am currently pulling a 1325lb trailer with approx 1000lbs of gear. The new enclosed is 2400lbs and will still have 1000lbs of year in it. So I am only adding about 1000lbs of weight that I am pulling.

You'll be fine in town pulling that weight. You already have the auto trans cooler on the front of the radiator so it should be a breeze to pull. If you experience too much rear sag, like previously mentioned, install some rear airbags like AirLift or Firestone.

I would be as much or more prone to monitor the trans temperature when towing in traffic, stop and go traffic with less air moving over the radiator will cause temperature to be higher than when constantly moving, the only thing worse than stop and go traffic is towing uphill.

A OBD2 dongle and good app doesn't cost that much and will be good insurance and will let you know of trouble before it's too late, they also give you many more options that are good to have, read trouble codes, reset codes, plus "real time" read outs of all the parameters of the engine, vehicle, etc.

It is very easy and inexpensive to add a gauge to monitor your trans temp. My Tundra has one part of the oem gauge cluster so I added 1 on my 3rd gen just because the vehicle is so old and I can see when it might be an issue even though i never tow with that vehicle.

Shouldn't be an issue for these car. I have the same car with a spacer lift and stock xreas and trans cooler. I will tow a 16' enclosed trailer full of quads and gear. From my calculation i'm right around 6000lbs plus 4 people in the car. I will tow this rig 2-3 times a year, about 250 miles each time with some steep grades (grapevine). Trailer has electric brakes on each axle paired with a weight distribution hitch. These two thing is key! There is very little sagging but no issue and complaint with power, stopping and suspension here.

I also tow a boat 20' boat that weights around 4500lbs plus 4-5 people once a week. The tow is about 45 miles round trip and is flat. Boat is not rigged with brakes or weight distribution hitch. Without the WDH, it will sag a bit and is a bit bouncy so airbags will be added soon to improve ride quality. With that said, its much easier to tow the enclosed trailer.
