I would be as much or more prone to monitor the trans temperature when towing in traffic, stop and go traffic with less air moving over the radiator will cause temperature to be higher than when constantly moving, the only thing worse than stop and go traffic is towing uphill.
A OBD2 dongle and good app doesn't cost that much and will be good insurance and will let you know of trouble before it's too late, they also give you many more options that are good to have, read trouble codes, reset codes, plus "real time" read outs of all the parameters of the engine, vehicle, etc.
