Current Generation 4Runner Crash Test Question

Hi,

I'm looking at potentially getting a used 4Runner Trail Edition 4WD but am a bit concerned on the crash tests. I did a search on this but did not find too much discussion on this but I was just wondering what people on here thought of the 4Runner's crash test results. It does not seem unsafe, but just seems a bit off given Toyota's reputation for build quality.

My 2 areas of concern are the NHTSA frontal crash with the passenger getting a 3 of 5 star rating (down from 4 stars from the 2003-2010 4Runner) and the small overlap test with the IIHS. Below are the links to the tests. Any inputs good or bad on this?

The trucks are built solid for their age, but safety has become a priority for most companies especially since 2010+. If it is your main concern, I would consider a different/newer vehicle.

Someone can correct me if I’m wrong here - but these tests are performed at a standard speed and angle against an immovable object looking at passenger injury.

A major portion of crashes are vehicle to vehicle or against a moveable object and so mass and size matter.

I’d rather have my family in a bigger suv ( read my 4runner) against someone’s van etc than a compact car with better crash test ratings

I've been on this forum since right after buying my rig in 2013. I've seen multiple people crash their rigs to varying degrees. Injuries have always been pretty minor. Take it for what it's worth I guess. I rear ended a newer Mitsubishi Lancer last year. I had literally a scratched front lower bumper and hers needed $5k in repairs.
