Picked up these bad boys for $200 out the door. Was fully expecting (and kinda hoping) I'd have to pull myself, but they were already on the shelf. From an 07 FJ. Completely forgot about the other things I was wanting to get because these came with some unexpected goodies. Mirrors were really just for the thrill of the junkyard experience since there are cheap ones online, but one more OEM CV axle would be nice so I have a complete pair of replacement axles
For $200 out the door I got - 2 spindles with zero rust
- 2 wheel bearings (which I'd just keep as oh shit spares, but they are in good condition)
- 2 dust shields in mint condition (not sure if 319 or 338mm shields, but 338 would be cool if I ever upgraded to the larger size)
- 2 wheel speed sensors and wiring harnesses
- All the brake line brackets with no rust
- 2 halves of a sway bar link lol
I then bought the JD fab spindle gussets to weld on
My 4xInnovation sliders also showed up, so gotta find time to buzz those on
Still have a little backlog of stuff to type up: - Suspension Writeup - half done and I haven't touched it in weeks
- Trim rear cover and type what I did to fit the 35x10.5s
- Poor Eagle Jack mod to HF 1.5ton

Are you gonna do the JD steering kit as well?

I thought about it, but I don't know if I'm quite to that level yet. I'm also not a fan of heims on a daily driver because ball joints are just easier to maintain lol.
Worst comes to worst, I could retrofit it afterwards, since the double shear tab is a separate piece. Although I have heard its harder to drill once the spindles have been welded on

I have TC gussets and have been considering the kit. My rig already sounds like a cabinet full of pots and pans going down the road anyway lol.

Pretty much haven't done anything to the 4runner recently. I've got an extra day off this weekend, so maybe I'll get to the sliders or spindle gussets, but probably going to take it easy. School, work, and band all together has been kicking my butt this past week.
Also this is the 200th post on my build thread yay
Might have mentioned, I started driving the bus for the local town and this is really one of my favorite jobs ever. These are technically transit coaches, but their primary function is to be the "school bus" for the neighboring apartments to VT. Something about it is just so much fun
The bendy bus! These are really interesting, since it doesn't drive like a regular trailer. Behaves much different, but its not very difficult to drive, which I believe is due to the center joint (essentially the hitch) being so far behind the rear axle of the front section vs how towing with a truck or suv would be. I think they're almost easier to drive than the 40' straight buses
The not so bendies: a 40' and 35' pictured here.
Heres a full stuff (bus knelt) on a 305/70r22.5, essentially a 40x12" tire. Wheel wells are absolutely massive for these bad boys (note: someone else lightly curbed this tire, not me lol)

I just wanted to drop in and say thank you for your awesome detailed how-to posts, they are great. My main ride is a 2016 taco so I'm usually over on tacomaworld, but decided to make an account here since I've been reading all your how-to posts... I'm rehabbing my old clapped out 2003 4runner and redoing the suspension, changed out the CVs etc right now, it's quite the rabbit hole lol. Your posts are super helpful!

Thats awesome, thanks for checking them out! Hopefully they're helpful, and of course, let me know if you have any questions. I meant to get on my suspension writeup since I installed that a few months ago, but just haven't had the time to get it finalized with school.
I've been spending some time on my local area TacomaWorld threads, so I'm over there too occasionally haha. I actually think I have more TW posts now than here, but most of them are BSing with friends

haha yep these buses are on air bags, and they can kneel to allow easier boarding for passengers. So I guess when unkneeling, they're lifting. The last two pics of "full stuff" was the bus knelt as joke about stuffing 40" tires haha
recently drove the full electric bendy bus. It has 2 drive axles (vs conventional diesel bendy has only 1), so I guess that makes it 4wd. In a 3hr shift, it only lost 10% charge, which means the batteries have to be massive!

I am writing this to procrastinate on my final exams lol. I'll be done for this semester on the 15th, which is a relief. Been super busy with school, marching band, and work so I never really got around to my 4runner projects. Next semester no marching band, so that will free up 10-20 hours per week haha. And despite being super busy, its a welcomed change from last fall being in my room all the time. Marching band has been back to normal and bus driving is super fun!
I really wanted to finish my sliders up over Thanksgiving Break, but I caught the flu which ruined my plans. Towards the end of the week, I was able to plow through the spicy cold air with my weak flu lungs and get them welded up and prepainted. I'm going to zoom home Thursday the 16th, get my sliders welded onto the frame, then either head out with the local guys on the 18th to do some lighter wheeling.
While I'm home for winter break, I'm also going to weld up my spindle gussets and see if I need to run spacers to keep the tires off the gussets. I'm hoping the skinnies will come in clutch and not need spacers, but if so, I'm going to try to run the smallest possible spacers, like 1/2" spacers with longer studs. I think the skinny tires look bad with too much poke, and having the 03-05 flatter flares, they're already flush. I'm also thinking about just replacing the WBs while I'm up there because they're parts store bearings with ~40k miles on them, which would be easy to buy ones with prepressed with longer studs.
I also finally purchased a 5th tire and 5th 8-hole wheel to have a matchy-matchy spare. I weighed them this time too. The wheel is 28lbs and the tire is 67lbs, bringing the combo to a whopping 95lbs lol. So much for a skinny tires setup being lighter lol. For now, I'm just going to toss it in the trunk whenever I go somewhere beyond around town, but eventually I'd like to weld up a tire carrier/rear bumper for the back that hugs really close to the tailgate. I also need to cut out the crossmember and some rust back there, so would be good to knock it all out at once. Only issue, is that I'm starting to outgrow my welding setup. I'll have to see how much time I have next semester, but may be time in to invest in a better machine.
Thanks for reading my text wall, hopefully I'll have some good updates and pictures to share in the next week or two. Have stuff on the 35x10.5 fitment typed up, just need to get back to finish it up.

What engineering discipline are you majoring in? Mechanical I'm assuming?
I graduated from the UNCC mechanical engineering program here in Charlotte back in 2011.. can't believe it's been 10 years.. I concentrated in the motorsports program and really wish I had more time to spend in the shop and learn welding early on instead of just last year on my own time. It has been one of the greatest skills I've been able to acquire for all my car hobbies. Obviously learning to wrench on my own stuff from my dad has been the number one thing making both my street and off-road hobbies possible at a reasonable cost.. I can't imagine having paid someone for all the work that i've done on my cars for the past 17 years.
I need to make some time to go weigh my setup and see what its sitting at currently.. I was astonished at how much weight I picked up going to the 315/70-17 tire.. I didn't quite weight it, but I would imagine its easily 100+ lbs. If I had to guess I would say i'm at 6500lbs considering the gross weight on the door tag is like 5700 lbs.
Keep trucking along with your build man, if I had to do it again I would definitely skip the hitch-mounted swingout carrier and build one directly into the factory reinforcement with the factory bumper trimmed around it. The amount of clearance you lose with a hitch-mount is unreal. I find that I'm pretty limited on departure angle even with the coastal offroad bumper I have now..
