Rear hatch gas strut upgrades for gobi ladder weight?
Been searching for a good 30 minutes and I cannot find any information on upgraded gas struts. I want a pair that can stay up with a gobi ladder and a full trasheroo on it.
Has anyone already addressed this?

I haven't replaced the 4runner tailgate struts and have no experience with struts combined with the gobi ladder, so take this with a grain of salt.
I replaced the original tailgate struts on my mom's 05 sienna with some new ones from amazon, and the tailgate whips up really fast now and is super strong. I have no idea if it flew up with that amount of power from factory new, but these bad boys could probably hold like 13 gobi ladders (okay maybe thats an overexaggeration). Maybe its because they're labeled as "strong arm", but I think its because they're for the auto liftgate and ours is a standard liftgate. Could be a totally different story on the 4runner since they didn't have auto liftgate.
For reference, these are the sienna ones: Amazon.com: Qty (2) StrongArm 4590 Fits Sienna 2004 To 2010 Liftgate Lift Supports With Power Liftgate: Automotive. I'll measure to see if they're the same length, I imagine the ball socket ends are pretty standard.

Thank you for your experience with the Sienna gas struts. Still interested in someone who has done this who can 100% confirm it holds up their accessories.

I don’t have/use a trasharoo, but my 16 year old OEM struts still hold up my rear hatch with a Gobi ladder on it. The hatch opens the whole way without my help. The Gobi ladder isn’t very heavy, based on my recollection of the installation, and compared to the weight of the hatch.
Considering how strong the StrongArm struts are that I recently put under my hood (much stronger than OEM), I would think they are definitely strong enough to hold up a hatch with a ladder and just a trash receptacle, unless you’re putting a ton of heavy garbage in the trasharoo.

I have a Gobi ladder on my 5th gen 4runner and I installed the upgraded struts that gobi sells from their website and they hold up pretty well. I do not have any accessories on my ladder but they feel like they should be able to hold up accessories too

I had my 3rd Gen 2000 4Runner liftgate struts rebuilt by Strutwise. And they put an extra charge of gas in them to counteract extra weight or cold climate. I was very pleased. The struts lifted the hatch with ease.
If your struts are mechanically sound, and you’re willing to be hatchless for a week or so while they’re being worked on and in transit, give them a call. Located in Canada. Talk to the owner and explain what you want. He’ll give you the info about how to pack and ship.

Hey sorry for getting back to this late. I measured and looks like the sienna struts are about 26" long and the 4runner struts are 20-3/4" long. The body section of the struts for the sienna are 15-3/8" and on the 4runner are 12-3/4". Based on the body section being larger than on the 4runner, I would guess they won't fit. Would be nice if they did fit, after little research it seems the struts meant for the auto-liftgate are much stronger than the normal struts.

What was the total cost to have them rebuilt and shipping?

Cost was $51 per strut. Plus $22 for shipping. That was about 3.5 years ago.
Call them up and discuss your needs. They rebuild struts for all sorts of high end cars, airplanes, specialty equipment. They’ll tell you how to ship to/from the US to avoid the duty charges.
Edit: You’ll also need to ship your struts to them. I forget what that cost me. You’ll have to check the US Post Office website for the cost to ship a parcel to Canada.
Edit #2: To keep your US to Canada shipping charges as low as possible, pack both struts in as small a box as possible. But I think the smallest you can get it will be 24 inches x 3 x 3. And declare the value as $5. Weight is probably 5lbs. If you plug these into the USPS calculator to Surrey, BC, V3S from your zip code you’ll get the charges. Now that I think about it I paid about $40 to ship to Canada years ago. Now when I plug in my zip code I get $48.
This may be getting to your breaking point of cost new vs rebuilt. But with a Strutwise rebuild you will get your own struts back which you know will fit, and they will be filled with a higher gas charge that will definitely lift your heavier hatch. It was worth it for me.

I bought the Strong Arm struts from amazon. A ladder is the next thing on the list for me and my struts we’re wearing out anyway so I thought I’d get ahead of the game. I’m sure they’ll be fine. When I open the hatch now it flys up real quick and the first time it about clocked me in the chin.

I run a Gobi Ladder with Trasharoo on my rig. Even with trash and such in the trasharoo the strongarm lifts the tailgate just fine. It is a solid upgrade from stock and def needed after the OEM ones could no longer hold the weight. Especially in cold weather.

I installed the strong arm hatch struts this weekend and they are definitely stronger than the stock ones I had on. We'll see how they do with a full trash load next trip.
