Vibration update...
Read this at the Lexus owners club site. Is this what we've all been wating for? I will update after I give this to my Toyota Tech...
I picked up my GX-470 in late January, 2004, and mine was one that exhibited the noise/vibration between about 65mph and 80mph. I received a call from my dealer on February 19th to inform me that Lexus had a fix (the fix was released on the 19th). They had already ordered it, and I had it installed today. Apparently, the fix involves a number of parts, so they needed the vehicle for most of the day.
I am extremely happy to report that this does fix the problem. This was the only complaint I had with the vehicle. Now, it rides and sounds just like a Lexus. I'm convinced that the fix resulted in a more "buttery" ride at any speed (although it could just be me). I had a smile on my face while driving home from the dealer...no noise at all. Ahhhhh...
The service department said that all new GX-470s are being delivered with this "fix" from the factory, so this shouldn't be a problem for the most recent vehicles...and it certainly won't be a problem going forward.
If you've been waiting or wondering if this fix would make a difference, believe me...IT DOES.
I'm not sure what the exact problem is, but it had something to do with vibration, and the fix has to do with dampening the vibration. There are a number of parts that needed to be added/replaced, which is why they needed the vehicle for awhile.
As for why some vehicles exhibit the problem and others don't, my personal theory is that some people notice it and some people don't. I've tried to show the problem to a number of people, and many of them can't identify any problem at all. I do know that it is more evident in the driver's seat...I think this is partly because the corresponding vibration can be felt through the steering wheel. Even on mine, it was more difficult to identify from the passenger seat.
I can still hear the noise if I am under power between about 70mph and 75mph, but I have to listen VERY closely. If I didn't know the noise ever existed, I doubt that I'd ever notice it.
Here is some of the pertinent information from my service invoice. The descriptions are truncated, but someone here can probably make out what they mean:

Man, and I was all excited. You're definitely a step ahead! Sorry for missing your post and thanks for staying on top of the situation. It will be great to be done with this annoying problem on an otherwise great truck!

Looks like the driveshaft was causing the vibrations and all they did was redo the yoke and made up a something to absord the vibrations... Maybe a extra carrier bearing support?
This is exellent news.. Congrats.

From what I understand, the engine/tranny package is the same on both vehicles. I dropped off a copy to my Toyota dealer tech (actually a good guy) and will report back what he comes up with from Toyota Inc.
Sure hope this is the fix for all of us!

Discussion in this forum is good for information purposes but it will not fix the problem. I really doubt there is much the dealers can do to correct this problem on an individual basis. The Lexus TSB looks to be fairly expensive at least in man-hours required. The best they can do is bring it to the attention of the Regional Toyota representative, per my dealer. When a TSB is issued for the 4Runner, then the situation can be addressed by the Toyota Dealer.
So I strongly suggest that if you are truely concerned about the problem go to the NHTSA and file a complaint.

If the complaints come pouring in Toyota will do something because Toyota receives the complaints from NHTSA.

Did NHTSA the first week of the problem when the dealer wouldn't/couldn't fix. I figure the TSB will role downhill soon from Lexus to Toyota since all the parts on the trucks are the same in the case of this issue. My dealer said they have access to the Lexus tech bulletins because of the Toyota Group covering both Lexus and of course Toyota.
Trying not to be too much of a squeaky wheel, but if the fix is in house, why can't we all get it?
