Tire plug?

I took the runner to have a tire patched. I didn't notice until I left that they used a rubber plug. Is this safe for highway use? Or meant as temporary? Thanks.

It is safe. A tire can be patched/plugged if the hole is in the tread. If the hole is in the sidewall, you need to get a new tire.

The plug is a permanent fix, not a temporary one.

Most reputable tire stores won't plug a tire anymore. I saw a display once that showed what the inside of a tire can look like when it's punctured. The outside had a tiny hole but the inside was ripped open. That being said, I've used plenty of plugs over the years with no problems. You should be fine.

Being an old school tire guy, I use a plug to get me to where the tire can be patched.
I have seen plugs lead to ply separation.

That probably is a patch with a built-in stem/plug Stem Repairs - Dura-Vulc Most tire plugs look like rough cord or string dipped in rubber, and whoever installed that patch should've trimmed off that protruding piece.

Thanks, I'll go ahead and swap it back on for a while and see what it does.

I am never buying LT tires again, next time will be at least a c load. I never had to get a flat fixed in 5 years on my Nitto Trail Grapplers E loads. Those tires saw a lot of dirt too. I've had this set for a year and this was my second tire repair, and these have been all asphalt unfortunately.

Maybe I'll just get some STT Maxx in E and avoid the headache.

Mine had a hunk of steel shoved through the tread. That was my wife's van with almost new Michelins.
