Damn, I don't get how they improve anything if they're the same radius and such. Any good threads on TW about it? Never heard about these until now. Might be nice to just pretty up my engine bay.

It’s the weight reduction in the lightweight pulleys basically reducing resistance. Plus that red anodized aluminum would probably look sharp.

Btw. Thank you for starting this thread. Been watching it for weeks since the group buy #2 was ongoing. I just got in for the group buy #3. This seems pretty intimidating to me, but then again so has everything else I’ve done on my 4Runner so far.

Thanks to this great site with tons of experience, it’s a lot easier to have the confidence to get this kind of stuff done.

It's seriously not that hard at all. Just take your time, plan for three to four hours. Stay organized, lots of bolts come out. The valve cover bolts that go around the covers are finicky. They're like 8 lbs torque value. Be careful I snapped one. I was using a milwaukee M12 3/8 ratchet, accidentally squeezed the trigger past the lowest setting and boom. I'd do them by hand for sure. The mercedes engine mount tool was perfect for torquing the gear bolts.

If i could go back, I'd budget more time and paint the valve covers while they're off. I'll probably do that eventually anyway.

I would do the blue, my plenum spacer is blue. I bookmarked them for later......

The timing is what scared me the most. I turned the engine to the 0 mark on the crank pulley probably three or four times until the cam gear timing marks lined up. Once it was all perfectly lined up, I was careful to not move anything anymore. The gears are a bit tricky to get in, but not impossible. Just be patient.

I jumped on the latest group buy, have been eyeing them for a while but wanted to see first hand experience. Any thoughts on these cam gears and the XTP Manifold Spacer. Wonder if that would be a good combo with some positive results.

I installed both at the same time so kind of hard to gauge what improvements each gave. My truck drives loads better now though. Better skinny pedal feel, lower idle, even the exhaust note changed. Definitely worth the time to do it.

Finally have some mpg data to report. I always fill up until the pump stops, and calculate the mileage by writing down the mileage at fill up and mileage at half tank (10 gallons).

Here is the last few before the gears and the ones since. The first one had a bottle of Lucas injector cleaner. The last one included an easy Sunday drive on the highway to a local waterfall picnic spot loaded up with cooler, disc cooker, propane tank, two kids and wife. Not bad for the price of the gears!

Dang, thats a solid 2mpg upgrade! Would be interesting to see how much improvement there would be on a stock 4runner, which makes me tempted to hop on the buy. Where I am right now, speeds are all over the place 25-65mph, so I've gotten as low as 14mpg on a completely stock 4runner.

Before my Falkens/Ray 10's I had heavier wheels and Nitro Trail Grapplers (MT's). I had no plate bumper, skids, sliders or hitch carrier with full size spare and she was doing in the 13's around town, it was atrocious lol

I did install a manifold spacer at the same time and new spark plugs and PCV valve.

I installed mine last weekend. Have not gone thru a full tank yet so it'll be a while. I just did the gear install and nothing else since I did the spark plugs earlier this year.

Maybe yours will be a fairer account of just the gear install. Mine is hard to gauge exactly because of the spacer. But it drives so much better!

@montijo505 can you post a link to the spacer you used? I might as well get one as well and just do it once. Also did the spacer come with a gasket as well or should I order the plenum gasket in addition?

Can you also post a link to the Mercedes engine tool you talked about as well?

I don’t recall seeing that info but wouldn’t surprise me if I overlooked it.

Here's both, the spacer comes with just a paper gasket that goes between the spacer and plenum. You either reuse your existing plenum gasket or buy a new one, I opted for a new one.
