Loose shifter help

I have. V-6 SR5 2WD 4Runner..
The transmission is solid; however I have a loose shifter on the console. What I mean is that in drive I can move it Right to left in gear . I’d like to fix it, but a New OEM shifter is $700. I bought a used one from eBay but it was broken.
Does anyone else have this issue?
Is there an easier fix?
Thanks
Frank

Check out these two threads, I think it could be the shifter cable that's the problem.

truck stuck in gear or in neutral (I think)

So 3 weeks ago, I brought my 03 V6 to a friend who is a HDM to replace the rear brakes, and on my way there it happened to me. I do use 3rd due to the type of roads around here. He reviewed the pin repair and tried it. Worked till this weekend when it happened again(I was pulling alight trailer with my zodiac).Anyways, all suggestions would be appriciated.

my shifter became sticky, which is supposed to be what happens before the pin breaks and it goes floppy. but it went back to normal and i've been fine for a year. i read a lot about this and my plan was to just buy a used shifter on ebay as i saw them going for less than 100. i kind of felt like that would be the easiest/cheapest solution. i don't think it's as easy as just replacing a part. i feel like this is going to happen to me eventually so interested to learn of other people's experiences and solutions.

i kind of feel like the handful of people who pulled off a diy solution were really good at that type of work, and based on my reading here i don't think there is a standard goto fix for this problem. i may be wrong though.
