I think you hit the nail on the head with the rust/vacuum seal thing. Once the ball joint gets going, it comes out okay.
Good that they came out as a whole, Hi-DesertT4R's came out like that too. For me, digging out the shells from the LCA was the worst part.

I was just poking fun, your write up was great actually. Very informative since you had a hard time doing it, my experience pales in comparison.
I was glad not to have to battle with the bushings as well as the ball joint.
On an unrelated note, I took the CV's out to have room to drill the cam tabs. 12" chisel and 3lb sledge, like two or three taps each and popped right out from the flat spots. I still don't understand how people have such a hard time popping them out. To get it back in, like in your write up, line up the splines and use the outer half as a slide hammer, popped right in.
I was most worried about getting the cam tabs off, again surprisingly no issues, came right off.

I did it myself. I planned on having a local guy do it and he quoted me $400ish all said and done.
I figured for the price I should try to learn. Scored a Lincoln mig welder on Craigslist and necessary tools/consumables for about $300.
Practiced on scraps, just melting them together at the angles I thought looked appropriate from looking at the parts.
Once I felt comfortable, I dove in. No major issues along the way other than on the insides some of the angles/depth were challenging for a novice.
I still have to get a winch. That will be the true test lol. I have pulled a few cars with tow straps from the shackles on the bumpers and no stress/cracks I can see.
Only advice is if you get tubes, make sure the hood opens and closes before welding. I made the mistake of not checking clearances and had to cut off my headlight hoops. Still want to get around to getting some to weld on as I like the look better.
I would say go for it, really not too bad of a project.

Great thread man, love the dry humor/sarcasm! It's how I feel on most every project once I get into it.
Bumper looks great!

Thanks my dude. I need to get around to selling my tire carrier and building your swing outs. I like the look much better.
Maybe once I button up the front end and a few other small projects.

Got the driver side done. Just need to put the tire back on.
Passenger side I worked on a bit this morning after breakfast. The ball joint finally gave after two days of penetrating oil sitting on it. I heated that bad boy up, and stayed on the trigger on the impact. I was about to give up and drive to a shop to have it pressed out when I noticed the seal had broken, it had about a 1/8 inch gap between the joint and LCA. I reassembled the press and gave it some more and slowly but surely it pressed it out.
I got the bushings out easy peasy. Some pictures to make
@ y=mx+b
envious again.
I installed the new bushings and ball joint after cleaning it up. Tomorrow I'll weld the spindle gusset on. Reassemble and go have the toe set by the shop. Unless someone has a good video or write up of how to do it in my garage.
Then to start on the exhaust cam gears and intake plenum spacer. That job should be easy compared to this.

Are you suggesting this isn't something to be envious of lol. I see an intact cam bolt and both bushings together with shells in one picture, and I think it must be photoshopped lol

Pic of rebuilt LCA. I accidentally broke the grease zerk off on the LBJ, I'm gonna have to drill it out and buy a new one. What do people use in these? I use Mobile 1 for the drivetrain and rear sway bar bushings. Will that work in the ball joint and tie rods?

Welded up myself, do not under any circumstance TIG weld the entire thing
If you dont have much fabricating experience but can purchase your own tools id say give it a shot. You'd probably have to Stick weld it since 75/25 bottles are expensive just by themselves.

I'd like to think of myself as more of a dummy with a socket set and free time lol. Nothing like being bored cooped up/working from home to motivate one to dive into some bigger projects.
Progress looks awesome! I'm glad your LCA rebuilds are going smoothly, other than the zerks!

I stripped out the threads on the LBJ trying to drill it out. Ordered a replacement on amazon as I can't get them locally. Everything else is done pretty much. Gotta play the waiting game now to put it back together.
My passenger CV is spewing grease. Luckily I have a freshly re-booted spare to swap in while I get a clamp to replace the loose one.

Waiting on the ball joint to finally finish up. Seems like this project has taken forever. Maybe because I've worked on it in bits and pieces due to work.
Passenger spindle gusseted.

Pile of parts removed. Not all but most.
The cam bolts are still ok. Anyone have use for them? Not seized, could use a good cleaning for the surface rust but still functional. $20.
