Great White Pig build/maintenance/no one cares thread.

Swapped in Icon overland 3” rear coils. Nothings wrong with the 2” I’ve been running but wanted a bit of rake and a longer spring. Ever since adding the rear tire carrier and spare I’ve noticed it’s a bit harsher over bumps. The initial test drive seems to show this fixed it. Old on right, new on left.

So tall I had to use the bottle jack between the axle/bump stop and a spring compressor to get them in!

I’d been wanting to go to a heavier load tire than the SL wildpeaks I’ve been running for two years. I came across some D load Duratracs in 285/70R17 for cheap locally. Only 4 though so I had to buy a new one to complete my set of 5. The one new one almost cost as much as the other 4!!

Anyway, here she is on the new shoes and the taller springs. This is still with the old tires loaded in back. I like the rake much more than the level look. Great White Pig build/maintenance/no one cares thread.-img_2357-jpg

Any idea what you're gonna go with? All terrain, mudders or a hybrid?

I've had them sitting around for two months lol. gonna be a lot of hammering and trimming haha. Also want to get on fabbing a front bumper here soon, so these inevitably not fitting should motivate me lol. R/T since I guess its a good combo. Lot of mud around here, so we'll see how they do

Great White Pig build/maintenance/no one cares thread.

Just got back home in the last hour from a family road trip/short vacation. Drove the old girl down to Rocky Point, about 1,300 miles round trip.

I wasn’t the least bit worried as I stay on the maintenance and would not hesitate to take this thing anywhere. However, I’m pleased to report she did great. Just swapped in the Duratracs in time and installed the longer/heavier 3” rear springs. That accompanied with the Duro Bumps made for an amazing ride, including the shitty roads my people fail to maintain even in a tourist town. Soaks up potholes no problems now even loaded down with plenty of luggage and the wife and 2 kids. Even the speed bumps were no problem, if you’ve driven in a border town you know how gross the speed bumps are lol.

I’ll probably do a steering fluid swap soon, steering wheel feels a bit heavy. I’m also still waiting on parts for the shock rebuild for the Icon coil overs. Might be time for a new serp belt as well, started squealing a bit at initial start up after sitting over night. I might do all the pulleys while I’m at it, I’m closing in on 170k now, it’s only a matter of time.

Mandatory vacation picture, I did plenty of this! Great White Pig build/maintenance/no one cares thread.-img_2455-jpg

Nice! I’ve heard it’s nice down there but I’ve never been. I’m closing in on 200k with my 2008 and I wouldn’t hesitate taking it anywhere. Since moving to ABQ last year, I think I’ve spotted your 4runner a couple times.

It’s real nice down there! Some of the beaches are really busy but we managed to find a quieter one thankfully.

I’ve seen that white 14 I believe somewhere, the bumper looks familiar. I’ll have to check out your 4th gen with the skinnies. Ive never seen skinnies in person, just weird internet photos lol.

Got the last of my Icon rebuild parts yesterday. Seal kits, com10 bearings, retaining clips for said bearings, smaller spacers to convert to “extended travel”, oil and springs. I ordered a pick set and a spanner wrench as I’ve read they make the job easier. Break down of what the parts cost me for a DIY job not including the nitrogen, which I have no idea what it’ll run as of yet.

Seal kits (2) and com10 bearing retaining clips(4 pairs) from Shockseals.com $66.67

Com10T-F1 bearings (4, 2 for each shock) from offroadwarehouse.com $36.15

1 gallon Icon shock oil and nitrogen fill needle tool from offroadwarehouse.com $89.14

I believe this is everything needed for a basic rebuild unless you need shafts or a new top hat or anything like that. I tried ordering a 1/2 gal oil from ORW which they showed in stock. I then got an email saying sorry, they don’t have it only a full gallon. I paid the difference and bought the nitrogen fill needle tool as well.

I also bought the following items:

Icon 3.14.700 springs. I have a lot of preload on 03.13.650. Got them off a guy on TW, they are brand new $180

Icon 7/8 .600 shaft spacer for extended travel conversion, $30

Pick set for removing seals on amazon $10

Spanner wrench to remove bottom of shock body amazon again, $12

Total $423.96.

Icon gave a quote of $482.94 plus shipping. By spending a bit of time shopping around online I saved $60. I had contacted a shop in town asking about the rebuilds. They said if I provided all parts (so everything I bought for $424) the labor would be $125 per shock and an additional $20 shop fee (nitrogen in guessing) for an additional $270. No thanks i think I can spare a weekend and save $250 lol. I’ll have the same shop do the nitrogen in the end though.

I have a buddy who has a nice stand spring compressor off amazon, there’s no way I’d bet on the crappy HF one I have for those heavy springs. As soon as I can grab that from him, I’ll dive in. Probably next weekend, I’ll report back on how easy or difficult I found this job to be. Wish me luck. Great White Pig build/maintenance/no one cares thread.-img_2572-jpg
