my AC Evap Core just went out as well. It's not uncommon, and it's not easy to get to. The whole dash has to be removed, which is where the majority of that cost is coming from. The part isn't expensive, but the labor is crazy because it's a very involved job.

Not something I would attempt, personally. I DIY almost everything on my car, but when it comes to ripping out the entire dash I'll gladly pay my indie shop to do it. In fact, that's where my 4runner is right now, currently undergoing the evap core surgery.

There are some write-ups on how to do it here on the forum, here's one:

Done! A/C Evaporator Teardown - OMG is Right!

He claims it took him and someone else 18 hours, oof! One of the reasons i'm not even attempting to do it myself.

I'd try to top off the freon. Your local parts store should have it.

I put in refrigerant with green dye in it into my AC system, and the green dye leaked out of the evap drain tube. Again, I didn't do the work myself, just the diagnosis - I took it to a trusted mechanic. I supplied the parts, and went with Denso for the evap core, which is the OEM supplier for most Toyota parts. I paid 8 hours of labor for the evap core to be removed and replaced.

Could easily be a scam. I had to replace a AC compressor after 14 years. They get leaks. Cost was $200 for DENSO AC at Amazon and has cooled for 2 years fine.

Take it to a different shop. Have them use dye to find your leak.

2005 SR5 150,000 miles.
