Question Choice of 2d battery for camperised Chilean 05 4Runner - small Amp or engine mods

Hi all,

I have reviewed a looot of dual battery set-up posts on this forum (thank you all!) - and was super confused until I finally understood that the engine of my 2005 4Runner SR5, bought in Chile, was actually slightly different from those of its US counterparts - making most common set-ups impossible with a decent-sized battery.

Sooo I am here for advice... My two options are basically:
1) set-up a small second battery (40Amh) without any mods to the engine
2) do some mods (potentially moving/changing the tube where the air enters... sorry English isn't my first language ) to be able to fit a larger battery - potentially 70Amh, like the starter battery.

We will be 2 people living full-time in the car, we don't plan to have huge needs (no blenders, air dryers etc.) but we will use inside and outside lights (c.70W altogether), charge phones/PCs, and occasionally run a cooler when camping several days at the same location.

I don't have a huge budget so looking for the cheapest safe option, which also wouldn't require using US parts (we are based in Chile)

Any ideas / recommendations?

Many thanks!

Celine

(sorry, I really need to clean the engine)

Why don't you post a photo of your engine bay? If it's that different, most of us are probably not be familiar with what it looks like.

There is always a way to make something fit, somewhere.

Just to get the creative juices flowing, here is 40 amp hours I built out of (8) 5Ah sealed lead acid batteries. It was made to install behind the seats of a single cab Tacoma.

You could consider using multiple smaller batteries. Odyssey makes the PC680 that might fit into a couple places. You have options, it just might be a little more custom than what you see around here.

Thank you for your reply! (and sorry for my slow reply - work got in the way today)

Wow - I am very impressed by your custom made 40 Amp, looks great!

Now updating my initial post with a picture of the bay!

Finally managed to upload the pics haha

The mod we are considering would be to shift the air admission tube a little bit towards the front of the engine bay, so that it goes almost until the power steering fluid.

This would mean that the space we have for a second battery would be 20x20x18cm instead of of 18x19x13cm, and we could have a 55Amph battery.

Keeping the same pieces (just adding a bit of metal to tie the tube) would make life much easier as international shipping is going to take months, but does mean that the air admission would be from inside the engine bay, next to the power steering liquid. This would be putting the piece which is at the end of the tube, currently just between the engine bay and the wheel, inside the engine bay too. But that shouldn't be an issue, right?

This could potentially be combined with other batteries in another place...
