Anyone Know the Size of the Stock JBL Amp?

Hey Guys.
I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on an entire new sound system for the old '03 'Runner.
New wiring, receiver, front and rear door speakers, amp, and a sub.
The amp I'll be using is the JL Audio RD900/5.
I'm going to build a custom box to hold a 10" side-firing sub as a few others have done before.

I've got most of my bases covered I think.
My question is this:
I (hopefully) want to use the same space/area the stock JBL amp sits...
Right next to the sub...
To put the new amp.
But I don't know the area dimensions and was curious if anyone happened to know.
An odd question, for sure.

Or...what locations, if not where the JBL sits, have others mounted their amps?
I'd like to be reasonably prepared before I start pulling panels and get some nasty surprise.

Oh, an additional weirdo question:
I read somewhere that the 4Runners have a dual antennae plug setup that doesn't like to mate too well to aftermarket receivers.
Any word up/thoughts/ideas on that data?

Thanks for any thoughts/info.

My JBL amp is 9”x6”x1 9/16”, not including the mounting brackets. I don’t know the exact dimensions of the area, but there was a little more room where the amp sits.

My aftermarket amps and cd changer are on the floor of my cargo area. I use the rear shelf to hold cargo. The amps and cd changer are under the shelf.

I used an adapter cable so that the two Toyota antennas would merge into my aftermarket head unit’s one jack. I don’t get very good radio reception, but I don’t listen to the radio a lot. I haven’t tried dealing with the reception issue yet.

You're going to want a digital amp for sure. They run a little cooler than the class a or ab hybrids.

I saw someone already answered the size of the amp, but the area where the amp mounts is roughly 11" wide, 7.5" tall, and 2" deep - maybe give or take a few 1/8ths

I decided to mount my JVC KS-AX3205D amp under the passenger seat

I didn't encounter this problem, nor have I personally heard about it, but that's not to say it's not a possibility for other makes/models

The OEM radio uses a diversity tuning system...fancy way of saying it has 2 antennas and the electronics pick the one with the strongest signal at any given time. You can see the antennas in the two rear side windows. You may be fine connecting just the primary to an aftermarket radio or you may benefit from the ?AC Delco? "Y-adapter" that will let you combine both antennas into one connector (reverse splitter, essentially). One of the antennas has a non-standard connector so you also need an adapter to convert it to a standard interface.

The other radio problem people have is the 4Runner also has a signal amplifier in the antenna chain. If your radio harness doesn't include a turn-on lead for the signal amplifier, you'll get poor to no reception.

Searching the forum should turn up multiple discussions for all of these topics and more. After 17 years, if it can be done to the 4th gen, someone's already done it and has the t-shirt to prove it.

Excellent information and thanks.
I know, right?
That's one reason I love my 4Runner so much.
In between my old Pathfinder Sport and the 4Runner, I had a Rodeo for a bit.
Literally near nothing on that car as far as DIY 'been there done that' information.
With the 4Runner, I don't think I've ever run into something that wasn't documented a hundred dozen times over.

Interesting about the antennae signal amplifier, that answers a question I had read about somewhere else.
That after putting a new receiver in, their signal was crap no matter what they tried to do, splitting, y-cables, they still had terrible reception.

The whole shooting match arrives Monday from Crutchfield.
Receiver, amp, front and rear speakers, and 10" sub.

I did figure that much out (Class D amp)

I downsized the amp from my original choice based on size alone.
I really, really want it to fit in the same location.
I think the one I chose should work OK there.

In case anyone's interested:
Receiver: Sony XAV-AX1000
Amp: Soundstream Picasso Nano PN5.64OD
Speakers: JL Audio C2650 (6.5" component w/ separate crossovers)
Sub: JL Audio 10W3V3-2
I'm building my own custom side-fire box for the sub, much like I've seen demonstrated here.
Because you guys have done it all already!

I don't know who did this, but I got this pic from right here on the forum.
Should look familiar to someone...

For the Diversity antenna as has been said already has the 2 antennas imbedded in each rear window, they look like defrosters and that’s what I thought they were initially.

There are 2 connectors for the antennas, 1 large and 1 small. The large is just the regular size that will fit into your radio. Most people just use the large only. The most important thing is to make sure you have power to the powered radio antenna. It is the plug in my 1st pic with the white foam around it.

I ran mine for a while with just the std. one connected and got decent reception. I ordered a Y splitter all in 1. All posts I’d seen have 2 parts, a y splitter with 2 large female ends then a large to small female adapter. I found an all inclusive one. I installed the splitter and used both antennas and don’t see a difference over just the large one only. Doesn’t matter much as I’ve installed my XM antenna since and only listen to XM any more. Sorry the pics are so dark and crummy.
